CONTEXT COMMUNICATION IN BRAZIL

My foreign country research is on Brazil. Unlike the U.S citizens who have a predominantly individualistic and low context in terms of interpersonal communication, Brazilians have a collectivist and high context interpersonal communication.

Example of High context communication in Brazil

The majority of Brazil citizens live a life of collectiveness. They prefer extended family living rather than the nuclear pattern. Most of their families in comprises cousins, aunts, uncles and other distant relatives. They also have a group mentality. They generally have a group consensus unlike the U.S citizens who are more individualistic.

Comparison of non-verbal communication between Brazil and the U.S

In Brazil, touching is very much common. Also, kissing on both cheeks during greetings is almost compulsory because most people do that. This is unlike how it is done in the U.S because touching is usually avoided and kissing is mostly reserved for intimacy and maybe the family.

Comparison of non-verbal communication between Brazil and the U.S

The way eye contact is perceived in Brazil is different from the way it is perceived in the U.S.Children from Brazil avoid eye contact from their elders as a sign of respect. In the United States, Children maintain a direct eye contact to show their respect. Also,in Brazil personal and physical space is not emphasized like in the U.S whereby a person’s physical space is very much important.

Comparison of greetings between Brazil and the U.S

In the U.S,the preferred mode of greetings is a firm handshake. This is unlike with the Brazil citizens as their common greetings include patting, kissing, holding hands and embracing. This is evidently shown in schools. Children from Brazil kiss their teachers on both cheeks as a form of greeting.U.S children just say ‘Hi’ to their teachers.

PERCEPTION ON TIME

The Brazil citizens do not pay much ‘respect’ to time as the U.S citizens. Tardiness and a last minute change of plan is very much common in Brazil. In U.S time is important. Punctuality is highly regarded.

You can be late for a meeting in Brazil and you will be condoned. The same will rarely happen in the United States. There is a tendency of a relaxed mood on how time is spent in Brazil but in the U.S there is great concern on how time is spent.

Other Brazil culture

Brazilians posses strong concern for social harmony and they advocate for proper human relationships. They also places a higher value on quality of life and nurturing. Brazilians also employ ambiguous communication to convey important information. This is very much different to the U.S culture whereby a precise language is used.

Brazil culture in depth

The Brazilians Allude to shared experiences in communication while the U.S citizens avoid allusions and connotations in communication.

The Brazilians also Prefer implicit language and derives most information from the context of the communication rather than the actual code used. This is different from U.S because Values are explicit and language is neutral. The U.S citizens derive most information through the actual code used to communicate.

More on Brazil

As a business man/woman you should know that Music and long, animated conversation are favorite Brazilian habits. When conversing, interruptions are viewed as enthusiasm. Brazilians enjoy joking, informality, and friendships. You should take note of this when doing business in Brazi.Formality is not so much appreciated.
