Stereotype Threat – a stereotype threat is a self-confirmed fear that one will judged based off a negative stereotype. Anxiety is also known to cause this condition.

1. Read Chapter 9 on Prejudice, specifically the section on Stereotype Threat.

2. Read the peer-reviewed journal article on Stereotype Threat by Steele & Aronson (1995):

3. Read the supplemental material on the website discussing how to reduce stereotype threat.

THEN - Answer the following questions in an individual journal response write-up that is due by midnight on Friday, March 20.

1. Describe what is meant by the term, “stereotype threat”.  Please do not just copy/paste the definition.

2. Describe the three (3) main experimental conditions used in Study 1. What were the findings with regards to Black subjects’ and White subjects’ performance on the task?

3. What were some of the possible explanations of the stereotype threat performance impact suggested in the paper?

4. Discuss the implications of Steele & Aronson’s (1995) findings when taking into consideration the sample sizes used in their studies, and their analysis of the statistical significance (or lack thereof).

5. From the additional information provided from the website,  www.reducingstereotypethreat.org  , describe three (3) key ways that research on stereotype threat has broadened since Steele & Aronson’s (1995) seminal article.
