Annotated Bibliography

Introduction

Texting while driving is a risky behavior that is increasingly apparent in young individuals. Texting while driving is common among young drivers because they are the most susceptible to conformity and other behaviors that influence texting while driving despite the risks associated with such behavior. The annotated bibliography will present various literature conducted on the subject.

Annotated Bibliography

Alosco, et al. (2012). Both Texting and Eating Are Associated With Impaired Simulated Driving

Performance. Traffic Injury Prevention, 13(5), 468-475.

The objective of the Alosco et al. (2012) research was to find out the effect of other driving behaviors associated with texting while driving behaviors such as eating and drinking. The study involved 186 participants, who were college undergraduate students. The study involved simulated driving and the use of the Kent Multidimensional Assessment Driving Simulation instrument to study the influence of eating and drinking behaviors associated with texting while driving behavior.

The study found that eating behaviors were not as dangerous as texting while driving behaviors. The study concluded that texting and eating behaviors have associations with poor driving but stated that there needs more research on the influence of eating and texting while driving in real-world situations.

Bayer, J. and Campbell, S. (2012). Texting while driving on automatic: Considering the

frequency-independent side of habit. Computers in Human Behavior, 28(6), 2083–2090.

The Bayer and Campbell (2012) study sought to find out how automaticity was a key role in texting while driving behavior. The study was conducted on college students. There were 441 study participants. The instrument used in the study was the Self-Report Habit Index. The study found that automaticity could predict the habits of the study participants. This was the case in the study after controlling for driver confidence, age and gender.

The study found that texting while driving is an automatic behavior that occurs without the notice of the driver. The research found that even if the researchers controlled other variables, such as attitudes and norms, the texting while driving behavior was automatic and occurred without the conscious awareness of the driver.

The Benden et al. (2012) conducted research review of literature on the methods of control, perceptions of parents and texting while driving behaviors over a 30-year period between 1970 and 2010. The research focused on identifying changes in research related to texting while driving and other such behaviors from evaluation of risk to reduction and intervention on such behaviors.

The research concluded that the increasing use of technology in the world today requires that research should find out various strategies to ensure the minimization of such behavior.

Shannon, L. (2010). Talking and Texting While Driving: A Look at Regulating Cell Phone Use

Behind the Wheel. Val. U. L. Rev., 44(237), 237-282.

The Shannon (2010) research article is about both talking while driving behaviors. The research investigates the deadly consequence of talking and driving behaviors on the road. The research is a review of the aforementioned behaviors and the regulations set in place to make sure that such behaviors are minimized to ensure the reduction of the various dangerous consequences associated with the behavior. The research finds that cell phones are a vital part of American society and more people are using cell phones while driving. The research helps to place the texting and talking while driving in context by highlighting the dangers associated with the behavior.

The research concludes that regulators should completely outlaw the texting and talking while driving behavior because of the dangers posed by such behaviors.

Wilson, F. and Stimpson, J. (2010). Trends in Fatalities from Distracted Driving in the United

States, 1999 to 2008. American Journal of Public Health, 100(11), 2213-2219.

The Wilson and Stimpson (2010) research investigated the fatal consequences of using cell phones while driving, which tends to distract drivers. The research used data collected from the Fatality Analysis Reporting System (FARS) to analyze the trends and characteristics of cell phone usage while driving.

The researchers concluded that fatalities resulting from using cell phones while driving behavior have increased between 2001 and 2007. The researchers conclude that such behavior leads to alarming fatalities in road accidents. Therefore, legislation should ensure that such behavior is restricted through stricter enforcement of laws and regulations relating to such behavior
