M&M Paper Chromatography Supplemental report guidelines.

· Refer to the main guidelines on Pilot under report “Lab report writing resources” – those are the ones we’ll be grading from. This supplement is to provide some additional help specific to this experiment.

· This is a partial JAR focusing a normal report up through experimental. Results will be just the tables and answering the questions.

· Resources/references. In order to explain the background for paper chromatography, you’ll want to use some good resources. Cite and reference them correctly.

· The lab handout (pilot) and recitation slides.

· The manual refers you to “Introduction to Chromatography” by Bobbit et. al. . This is available in Dunbar library on reserve. (Full citation given in the manual.) You may also find the intro to experiment 32 of use.

· You will want to reference the instructions. The reference is included.

· If you use other sources make sure they are reliable, well cited in the text wherever used and referenced. Make sure they are not from another version of a student report on this topic from here or elsewhere.

Cite references in the text using a standard method: ACS style guide (superscripts, or author – year), APA or MLA reference styles are also acceptable. (Guides available on Writing Center website).

Title:

Descriptive title that refers to the main point(s) in the report and is not the one from the manual.

Abstract: (not done)

Purpose or purposes: (see description in report guidelines)

· This can be a listing of several points, goals, and or claims. They should include both general and detailed purposes. Was the goal the answer to a scientific question, identification of a compound, or develop a technique or something else?

· What will the final claim (conclusion) be? If you know the claim, it can clarify what the purpose was or should have been. (Normally you would start with the purpose and proceed toward the claim at the end).

· Use these statements to write the rest of the report.

Introduction:

· Explain what chromatography is in general and paper chromatography specifically, the theory behind it, and why we’re using it here.

· Explain what a mobile phase is and explain what a stationary phase is.

· Why do some analytes move faster than others?

· Include hypothesis (or purpose from above)

Equations or chemical reactions: Sometimes are required in the introduction if they are fundamental to understand the background of the experiment. In this experiment there is only one simple equation (Rf) that would be presented in the introduction if you discuss it there. Rf = (Spot distance)/(Solvent Distance) (1)

· End the introduction with a summary statement of the main point/problem/ or hypothesis.

· In-text citations of references are critical and should be often. Refer to handout. May also us Exp 32 introduction and the

Experimental:

· In-text citation and end of report reference to the “handout” for the detailed procedures. (see Lab Guideline outline for exact reference.

· Written in paragraph form, not a list of steps. Do not rewrite manual.

· Brief, clear description of the procedure so the reader need not have the manual to understand the data and discussion.

· Variations in actual procedure from the manual.

· Mentioned specifically changes – 2.5 cm on paper, toothpicks, etc.

Not a full results section: tables only

· Table of standard Dyes from handout

· Table of M&M candy dyes from handout

Not a discussion section – answers to questions only.:

· Answer Post lab questions 1 through 7

Reference: Must have two or more references.
