Art Through t he Ages | Reflection Report (10% of final grade)
Assignment details
The purpose of this paper is for students to develop an independent voice when it comes to art appreciation. Students will choose their images from either the textbook or from class. If you are unsure about your choice of work, then please contact me. The paper should be a discussion about one work of art. I would suggest that you choose a painting as you might have more to say about this than a sculpture or piece of architecture. This is not a research paper – it is an analysis, one made directly by you about a single work of art. There are two art works that you cannot write your reflection on: the Mona Lisa and Raft of the Medusa.
Submission details
Double-space your report. It should be Times New Roman size 12 font and around 500 words. Include with your report a reproduction of your chosen image. A black and white reproduction is fine. Clarity of expression and the extent to which you have written a focused, concise, and well-presented reflection are important. Pay particular attention to grammar, spelling, and syntax.
Late papers without permission are penalized by 10% per day late. If your paper is late due a legitimate reason you need to contact me in advance of the due date. Papers that are found to have been plagiarized will receive a zero on the assignment. Submit to drop-box by week 12.
Grading rubric:
Please check out the grading rubric on the next page. Use the rubric as a checklist for your writing in responding to the work of art you have chosen for your analysis. The grading scheme has three sections that you need to adhere to. The report is marked out of 20.
Section I : Cover page ( 3 marks )
Include your name, student number, title of work, and name of the artist (1 mark)
Include a copy of the work of art chosen for the analysis (1 mark)
Adhere to correct formatting (double spaced, stapled, correct length) (1 mark)
Section II: What is your response to this work of art? (10 marks)
1 mark f or each question: Excellent (1) Good (.7) Fair (.4) Poor (0)
- Do you like the work? Can you articulate the emotion you felt when you first saw the work? Were you drawn to it or repulsed by it?
- What medium is used to make the work? (Oil, tempera, photography, charcoal, pencil, print, etc). Does the medium enhance the work and how?
- What is the scale of the work and how does this affect your experience of it?
- What colour scheme is used to create the work and why does this matter?
- Does the work look two or three dimensional? How is this achieved? How does this enhance the work?
- If there are figures, how are they represented? Does one figure have more authority or centrality in the work than another? How is this achieved?
- How is the image composed? How is space used in the work?
- Is there movement in the image? Does the action appear to be moving in one direction? If so, why? Is the image very static with no movement? If so, why?
- Does the image have unity and balance? What kind of mood is created? Or is the image unbalanced and cluttered? What kind of mood does this create?
- Is there a strong contrast between light and dark? If so, what mood does this create? Alternatively, if there is little contrast, what kind of mood does this create?
