CIS 102Q Problem Solving Using LEGO Robotics

Individual Homework #1

For this assignment you will learn about FIRST LEGO League (FLL), where children compete in LEGO robotics challenges.

Search the internet for information about FIRST LEGO League. Write a 3-page paper, using a 12-point proportional-spaced font and double spacing with 1-inch margins, using at least three cited references (see below). Here are some questions you might want to address in your paper. Choose what interests you, and don't try to answer them all in three pages.

· What is the purpose of the non-profit organization FIRST?

· Who founded FIRST, when, and why?

· When was FIRST LEGO League started?  Who else influenced its creation?

· What are the three main components of the FLL competition?  What is expected of the kids?

· How has FLL grown over the years?

· How effective is FLL in its mission and goals?

· What do you think about this year's challenge, Nature's Fury?

· Do not write about the history of the LEGO company.  Do not write about any specific FLL challenges/missions.

References

Make sure you properly cite all the works you reference and use quotes where appropriate!  Use citations within the text to identify all quotes and paraphrased facts, and have a complete reference list at the end of the paper. If you are unfamiliar with any formal paper style, use APA style for citations and reference list.  (The paper's formatting does not need to follow APA style, just the citations and reference list.) If you want to use a different common style, just note at the end of your paper which style you used.

A good web site on APA with lots of examples is here:  http://owl.english.purdue.edu/owl/resource/560/01/

This site also has an excellent set of pages on research writing.  Take a few minutes to explore the links under "Research and Citation" before you start writing, especially these:

· Avoiding Plagiarism

· Paraphrase: Write it in Yor Own Words

· Quoting, Paraphrasing, and Summarizing

Plagiarism will result in a grade of zero.
