It has always been a technique and a technology driven surgical discipline, this is because there is no regional anatomic focus. With the current developments in technology, the field of medicine has also benefited immensely. Technology has changed the way patients are handled in hospitals. Every aspect of medicine raging from neuroscience, to dermatology and other branches of medicine have been affected by technological advancements. In particular, dermatology that deals with plastic surgery has benefited from the technology developments. So, ho have the different forms of technology improved medical care in plastic surgery? In today’s life it’s more accessible and individualized, several technology and materials has emerged during the years. Improvement in the medical field has highly benefited cosmetic surgery world. Use of endoscope in facial rejuvenation is one of the most advancement in plastic surgery. An endoscope is a machine with a very small camera which is inserted through a tiny cut in the skin and the views of the underlying body tissues are transmitted on the TV screen (Steed, 1995).
The use of radiofrequency is the latest innovation in surgical field, radiofrequency is used to create softer and smoother tissue and remove damaged tissues in the body. In addition to that, tumescent technology advancement of liposuction has completely altered the way people reduce adipose fat tissues over their body. In relation to this method plastic surgeons distend the softer tissues and the fat with local anesthesia and through this way blood loss has been reduced a lot in comparison with the traditional techniques of liposuction. This type of technology is able to produce great results though an incision in the patient’s body, fat removal is achieved by a small laser fiber that inserted in this tiny incision (Mustoe, 1999).
Technology has affected plastic surgery through laser techniques; the new application of lasers is in skin resurfacing, carbon dioxide lasers are also being used in plastic surgery by some of the plastic surgeons. Use of laser can be effectively minimized with less tissue distraction. Lasers can be applied in many areas such as tattoo removal, treating red vascular lesion and many other areas.
