Describe customs and traditions of the cultures such as greetings, celebrations and courtesies. Standard(s) of Focus: MLI.CCC1.a Demonstrate knowledge of geographical locations where the target language is spoken.

Connections, Comparisons, and Communities (CCC) MLI.CCC1 The students use information acquired in the study of the target language and information acquired in other subject areas to reinforce one another. The students: A. Demonstrate knowledge of geographical locations and identify major countries, cities, and geographical features of the places where the target language is spoken. B. Apply previously learned skills from other subjects, when appropriate to demonstrate knowledge in the target language (e.g. using basic math skills). C. Identify examples of vocabulary, phrases, proverbs, and symbols from the target language that are used in other subjects. D. Relate content from other subject areas to topics discussed in the language class, such as the influence of explorers and settlers on various regions of the United States.

Describe the WORK SESSION: Day 1 Francophone Countries Use information from the internet or any other reference book to write major facts about francophone countries in Africa, Europe and the Caribbean Islands: Quebec, Martinique, Guadeloupe, New Caledonia, Tahiti, French Guyana, Belgium, Luxembourg, Switzerland, Morocco, Algeria, Tunisia, Senegal, Ivory Coast (Côte d’Ivoire), Laos, Vietnam, Cambodia, Madagascar, Rwanda, Mali. (Pick any 5 countries, worth 20 points) Facts: History, Government, Religion, Economy, weather. Day 2 Create a flash card by drawing pictures about one specific francophone country of your choice. Indicate: Current president/head of state, population, capital city, languages, and geography. Draw the flag of the country (20 points). Day 3 La France: un pays francophone Watch YouTube videos about France: French Facts for Fun & Facts about France (20 points) Focus Questions: What do we learn about public toilets in France? Some streets and intersections? When did the April Fool (or April Fish) originate in France? What are most French cars like? Describe the McDonald’s in Paris. Talk about the Tour de France. Give four other facts about France.(Higher level) Day 4 “Point Card Frenzy” Haiti: Un pays francophone Watch YouTube videos about Haiti: People Water | Haiti Project & The Haiti They’ll Never Show You (10 points) Focus Questions - Haiti Project: How poor is Haiti? What is the unemployment rate? What languages are spoken in Haiti? Name its capital and its religions. When did earthquake last strike Haiti? How about the outbreak of cholera? The Haiti they’ll Never Show You: Write about Haiti’s fortresses and crystal clear waters. Translate into English: “La perle des Antilles”. In Haiti, what is the presidential palace like? Points totaled based upon successful completion of questions, questions chosen (difficulty level), and additional points based upon participation and effort (10 points) Day 5 “APPLICATION OF KNOWLEDGE” Students choice: students will choose number 1 or number 2 1. Create a visual organizer of (minimum) 5 different francophone countries and indicate where they are found in the world. (20 points) 2. Can you make a rap song or a skit that covers important facts about one specific francophone country? (20 points)
