Posted: Wednesday, February 11, 2015 Due: Friday, February 27, 2015 on Turnitin (Moodle) at 11:55PM INSTRUCTIONS (Read Carefully) This assignment sheet is 2 pages and contains eight (8) questions in total. Please answer four (4) of these questions. Clearly indicate which question you are answering. Your answers should be no less than 100 words and no more than 250 words for each question. You should provide examples from the texts you are discussing, to illustrate and support your points. Your responses should not just include information from the lectures, but, most importantly, they must show evidence of your own analysis. Also, EACH answer should contain reference to at least ONE of the following key course themes:

1) Binary 2) Post-Coloniality 3) Authority 4) Centre/Periphery

Number your pages and double-space your answers. ****Do not write on any film or text in more than two (2) answers.**** SUBMISSION PROCEDURE Your completed test must be submitted through Turnitin on Moodle by 11:55PM on Friday, February 27. QUESTIONS:

1) Discuss ONE of the protagonists listed below as an example of the conflict between embracing and resisting ‘change’.

Antigone, Katniss, Elphaba and Oscar (Diggs)

2) Choose ONE female protagonists from ANY of the texts we have studied thus far, and discuss her significance as a symbol of ‘empowerment’ (becoming powerful).

3) How does the ‘ideology of beauty’ relate to discourses of ‘race’ and ‘identity? Discuss with reference to at least TWO of the course texts studied so far.

4) Discuss the significance of ‘home’, as a place and a concept, in ONE of the texts we have studied so far.

5) Describe TWO cautionary tales that arise from ANY of the texts we have studied so far and explain any moral lessons that the tale teaches through its narrative, and through the actions of its characters.

6) The destruction of Nature was a very important concern for the Romantics. Discuss with reference to two Romantic writers we have studied.

7)  We  have  examined  the  ways  in  which  the  past  has  shaped  our   understanding  of  the  present.  Write  a  response  with  reference  to  any   TWO  texts  we’ve  examined  so  far  in  this  course.  

8)  The  struggle  for  power  in  a  dystopian  society  is  often  counter-­‐ balanced  by  leadership.       With  reference  to  any  TWO  texts  we  have  studied  so  far,  explain  how   this  dynamic  works,  and  also  how  ‘power’  is  shown  to  be  different  from   ‘leadership’.
