Group Reading Analysis Assignment

Purpose:

After reading Thomas Friedman’s perspective on globalization in The World Is Flat (how he frames the problem(s) globalization presents to careers and work practices/processes; how he uses relevant information; what solutions he offers) our thinking process needs to broaden to consider multiple alternative perspectives on “the problem” of the Issue Analysis: how will globalization affect your future career? These selected readings (some are chapters from books on ereserve; some are additional chapters from The World Is Flat; one is a NY Times article online) are meant to offer alternative perspectives available for anyone in the class to use in his/her individual Issue Analysis.

In order to somewhat share the reading work and provide more practice in reading analysis, the class will be divided into small teams, with each team responsible for reading one of the readings listed below (also listed in Week 6 on the syllabus). Teams will then present in class their analysis of how the reading frames the problem, uses information, draws conclusions, and evaluating what the reading adds to our understanding of globalization. (Please note that, depending on the reading selection, not all “steps” of Wolcott’s model may apply, and / or some readings may leave you more “connecting to globalization” work to do.)

In class: Each team will have 5-10 minutes to present their analysis and respond to questions / discussion. Teams’ presentations will be evaluated in class using the rubric below.

The Readings:

Rifkin, “Introduction” to The End of Work

Sennet, “Failure” (from The Corrosion of Character)

Fraser, “Corporate Spin on the New World of Work” (from White Collar Sweatshop)

Friedman, “America and Free Trade” (from The World is Flat)

Krugman, “Can Europe Be Saved?” ( http://www.nytimes.com/2011/01/16/magazine/16Europe-t.html?_r=18&emc=eta1 )

Florida, “Closing of America?” & “New Competitors” (from Flight of the Creative Class)

Tapscott, from Macrowikinomics and Wikinomics

Friedman, “Globalization of the Local” & “Dell Theory …” (from The World is Flat)
