Assignment 5: Short essay

DUE DATE: winter semester in your tutorial on 9th or 10th February, 2015.

Instructions:

For this assignment, you are asked to write an essay with one of the following titles:

(a) ‘How and why one should reform the global economy’.

(b) ‘Globalization and the end of the nation-state’.

(c) ‘Intellectual property rights and pharmaceuticals: Who wins, who loses?’

For essay (a), the material to which you must refer consists of the readings by Joseph Stiglitz (from lecture 2, January 12th) and by H.-J. Chang (from lecture 3, January 19th).

For essay (b), the material to which you must refer consists of the readings by Layna Mosley (from lecture 1, January 5th) and by Naomi Klein (lecture 4, January 26th).

For essay (c), the material to which you must refer consists of the readings by Joseph Stiglitz (from lecture 2, January 12th) and by Schroeder, Pogge and Singer (Lecture 5, February 2nd).

You need only refer to these texts and no others to write the essay. If you use other sources, you must cite them properly in your bibliography.

The text of essay (not including title page or bibliography) should be no more than 6 pages in length (double-spaced, Times New Roman, font size 12).

The structure of the essay should be as follows:

i) Front page with essay title, your name, student number, tutorial number and TA’s name.

ii) Introduction (p. 1)

iii) A brief synopsis of the views expressed in the texts you have chosen (pp. 2-3)

iv) Discussion in which you express your agreement or disagreement with one or both of the texts, and in which you give your reasons for doing so.

v) Conclusion: a brief summary of your opinion on the topic, as given by your discussion (under iv)).

vi) A bibliography in which the two (or more) texts to which you have referred appear in alphabetical order by author’s surname.

The style and grammar of your answers and not only their content will be taken into account in the grading process.
