Team Project/Assignment.docx

Have topic that considers a number of important influences that would enable managers and leaders to improve the organization’s outcomes.

Each team member writes about one specific area or influence that a leader or manager could exert. Examples might be change, a good matrix organizational structure, deploying Theory Z, the results of situational leadership, etc. Notice the focus on outcomes – do not provide too much detail on the method of deploying your approach, but consider how it works and delivers improvements to the organization.

Each individual paper should ensure that there are ways of establishing the impact of their outcomes by including a brief consideration of measurement and rewards. Chapter 18 of the textbook may be helpful in this regard.

Week 4:

Complete your Team Charter document and agree your topic with the team. The Team Charter reflects the individual topics for each team member. Any changes would need unanimous agreement from the entire team.

Deadline: W4T2 Team Charter

Collaborate with your team to complete the Team Charter document. Each person should deposit the completed form (with information for all team members) in the drop box.

Important areas include:

Contact information and member names (A creative Team name is optional).

Collaborate and agree the individual topics. Consider how the team might integrate them into a single paper.

Agree roles and skills that will benefit the team outcome.

Exchange ideas, challenges, opportunities, and barriers for team success.

This course may provide a Team Live Chat and a Team Discussion Forum.

Total points available: 10

Week 5:

This week you need to complete your Team Research entry. Teams will need to collaborate to ensure a successful project during this week and week 6. There are two types of collaboration anticipated: sharing ideas and feedback to other team members.

W5T3 Team Research

Each team member submits a text response consisting of his or her own input:

Five quality sources in APA (no need for the hanging indent)

Provide five different journal sources that will support ideas for your individual topic. The sources should come from theSPC online library (or good equivalents). Typically, EBSCO and Gale provide good results if you choose academic or peer reviewed filters in the SPC Online library. See help and tutorials in the SPC Online library, visit a library, or make use of one of our College’s tutors.

You need to provide APA 6th edition references. For use in APA standards, you may also use online resources through Owl/Purdue @ HYPERLINK "https://owl.english.purdue.edu/owl/resource/560/01/"https://owl.english.purdue.edu/owl/resource/560/01/

Details

Teams should collaborate to ensure each team member has a good research basis for their topic area.

Teams will continue to discuss items during the rest of week 5 and week 6 to improve their outcomes.

If teams select to use external communications systems, they need to upload the outcomes to the team Discussion area under the Communications tab.

The text entered into this drop box is viewable by ALL Learners (not your points).

The quality of your five sources and the degree of compliance to APA will earn points.

Total points available: 10

Week 6:

There are no formal drop boxes or work to hand in this week, but there are vital preparations to achieve success.

Integrate all of your research and start your writing process for the individual portions of the team project. There is anEARLY deadline next week.

Week 7:

EMAIL A COPY OF YOUR INPUT TO THE WHOLE TEAM (Alternatively, place a copy in the Team Files area under the Communications tab. Email the team that it is in the Team Files location.)

W7T4 Team Research

Each student must submit their completed individual input to the team by using the W7T4 drop box located in Week 7 before the deadline indicated in the course deadlines.

Ensure that you have included your citations and references.

This drop box forms a record of input to the team and scores relate to being relevant input and being on time. However, your team members cannot see this drop box. If you do not mail a copy to all of your team members, they have to give you an F as being late or incomplete, leading to low score next week.

Total points available: 10

EMAIL A COPY OF YOUR INPUT TO THE WHOLE TEAM (Alternatively, place a copy in the Team Files area under the Communications tab. Email the team that it is in the Team Files location.)

Week 8:

W8T5 Final Team Project

Each team member should submit a copy of the final project before deadline. Your earned score goes intoMyCourses with your Team Project input; no input implies that there is no place for a score.

Scoring:

The team project, as entered by one or more team members, will set a team score. Individual scores for this team project may differ to reflect individual input or Peer Reviews.

Total points available: 50

W8T6 Team Peer Reviews

Team Peer Reviews

Peer reviews and individual input in Week 7 will influence individual scores of the final project item (W8T5).Peer Reviews must evaluate all team members. If a learner submits a Peer Review with most scores the same, the learner must show cause for all members receiving similar scores.

Total points available: 5 (This excludes any adjustments that may be made to the final project – W8T5)

Team Project/Extra to clarify.docx

Team Project:

Hello everyone:

Your paper needs to be based on management situations that can be improved. Your group paper needs to draw from a combination of management concepts in the textbook as well as cited outside library research and resources.

The paper needs to include and reflect at least of one of each of the dimensions of management (planning, organizing, staffing, leading and controlling) as well as specific techniques that you have learned in the course. Your team should pull from a variety of concepts in the book from the chapters such as planning and strategy, training, employee development, decision making, conflict in management, matrix management, Theory Z, situational leadership etc.  Refer to the triangle on page 5 and the management process.

You can pick a company, study it and identify the management problems they have that could be improved by what you have learned. For example, Disney is a monster organization, lots of stuff on the web about how Disney manages or you may consider a small company that you know, present how they manage it, identify their problems, recommend ways to solve problems and improve things.  What management techniques does this company use from the bottom level staff employee to a VP to be successful?

Your paper needs to consolidate the ideas that each of you is writing including a 300 word summary. Make sure your paper has an abstract, keyword, body and summary in APA.

Also keep in mind the three main levels of management:

1)  Strategic Management (corporate direction, long team goals and broader strategies in the business plan)

2)  Operations/Tactical management (technology, TQM, QM, supply chain, logistics)

3)  People management and development (HR, organizational cultures, missions that drive the staffing and development).

Does this help and clarify?

Your paper needs to be 750 words per person, 2150 for a team of 3 + 300 word collectively, at least 2,550 words in full APA research format. Review the APA sample. Also take a look at the attachment I have a Visual Guide to Learning. This may help you plot your topics and pull them together.

The Team Objective: Overview

To create a single, substantial paper that combines written input from all team members. The paper should comply with the following instruction:

1. Have topic that considers a number of important influences that would enable managers and leaders to improve the organization’s outcomes.

3. Each individual paper should ensure that there are ways of establishing the impact of their outcomes by including a brief consideration of measurement and rewards. Chapter 18 of the textbook may be helpful in this regard.

4. The team should collaborate on topic choices and ensure that the individual topics will integrate into a single paper. There may be a need for transition paragraphs when linking the papers. Other teams may take a single concept and divide sub-parts between their members.

5. The length of the final paper should exceed 750 words times the number of team members plus 300 words. [(Team members*750) + 300] words. The calculation of length does not include title pages, references, abstracts, and similar additions.

6. Formal academic writing and APA will be important, including quality references and citations to the literature.

7. Research that goes beyond the textbook will be required in every topic area. Research should include a number of quality literature sources.

8. The final team project is entered by each of the team members. Individual scores for this team project will differ to reflect individual input or Peer Reviews.

Running Head: Small management Project 5

The leaders and managers in an organization are of great influence to the organization’s outcomes. There are specific influences that leaders and mangers can exert in order to improve the outcomes in organizations. One such influence would be the implementation of a good matrix organizational structure. A matrix organization structure involves the division of authority by the project and functional area. In the structure employees will be expected to answer to their immediate supervisors; the project and functional supervisor (Sayles, 2009). The reporting relationships within the organization are set up in a matrix or grid form and not the traditional hierarchy. A good matrix organizational structure is typical since it brings together managers and employees from the different departments within the organization and they work towards achieving goals.

If properly implemented, a matrix organizational structure can lead to the improvement of outcomes in the organization in various ways. The matrix structure provides an opportunity for efficient exchange of information. The different departments within the organization will work together and have frequent communications with each other to find solutions to problems. Efficient communication lines within the organization enhance productivity and also provide room for quick decision making. A quick decision making process improves the organization outcomes as there are no delays in deciding and implementing policies. A specialized system of exchanging information allows quick response by managers when it comes to the needs of the organization and customers.

A good matrix structure advocates for democratic style of leadership. It puts into consideration the input from team members before the final decisions are made by managers. The chance of being part of the decision making process increases employee motivation and satisfaction. The employees bring their expertise into the organization and hence improving the organization’s outcome (Shull, 2005).The leaders and managers of an organization take part in the day-to-day activities of the organization that allows decision making through employees viewpoint.

A good matrix structure will allow better coordination of resources. It makes it possible for supervisors to focus on the areas where they have expertise. The functional supervisors focus on the hiring, training and management of employees while project supervisors concentrate on achieving the specific goals set in different projects. The focus on particular areas by supervisors provides an opportunity for working hard in the specific area. It influences the outcomes of the organization as everyone will do their best in the different areas of jurisdiction.

It also provides an opportunity for employees to specialize in a particular area. Instead of the employees carrying out different tasks, they specialize in particular areas where they can do well. These are the areas they focus on and hence it translates to positive outcome in the organization (Sayles, 2009). In this structure, employees usually come into contact with others from different functional areas through being part of project teams. The project teams provide room for employees to develop more skills than they would have if they stuck to the functional structure. It also allows flexibility across the various products or projects within the organization. The functional areas have a stock of employees who are talented and meet the requirements in projects (Shull, 2005).

An organization can measure outcomes through performance appraisal. Performance appraisal involves the determination and communication to employees of their performance in their jobs. Performance appraisals can be used to make decisions pertaining to pay increase, layoffs and promotions. Once the matrix structure is set up in the organization, the managers and leaders can use various performance appraisal methods to measure the organization’s outcomes. The methods include Management by objectives, production standards approach, essay appraisal, and critical incident appraisal. These methods can be used in determining whether the implemented structure has led to improvement of outcomes in the organization. They also help in rewarding employees who are performing well.
