Article Summary Checklist

Basic APA format:

______Double-spaced, 1-inch margins, Times New Roman, 12 point font

______Reference Page that includes only the citation of the article you chose. Failure to include a reference page will be considered plagiarism and will result in a ZERO.

Things to include from the INTRODUCTION section:

______A summary of the background information: The background information of an article describes the research that has been done in the past that led to the current inquiry. Be sure to include any information relevant to understanding the present article.

______Describe what the study is about. Explain the major question of the article and what the aim of the research is. Why is this research being performed?

______A statement of the hypothesis.

______Identify the independent and dependent variables. If your article is a correlation study, then there are not IV and DV. However, the article will still have variables; INCLUDE THEM in your paper.

Things to include from the METHODS section

______Describe the subjects: how many there were, gender ratios, any other information that is relevant (especially when considering the IV and DV).

______Describe any materials used in the study including any specific measures that were used.

______Describe the basic procedure of the study. How was the study carried out? Were specific locations used? Was there a specific process the researchers followed?

Things to include from the RESULTS section

______In general, what the findings were. Were the results statistically significant?

Things to include from the DISCUSSION section

______Did the researchers find what they were expecting to find? Why or why not?

______Describe the strengths and weaknesses of the study as explained in the article

_______Describe any recommendations for future research as laid out in the article

More pointers:

_____Use past tense. Use third person (don’t say “you” or “I”) and ensure it is clear which “they” or “them” you are referring to.

_____Stick to the facts. This is a formal paper, do not include personal opinion.

_____Use proper spelling and grammar. If I cannot understand what you are trying to say, then I cannot give you full credit.

_____Staple before class! Both the summary and article should be stapled (they can either be stapled separately or together). The rubric should be stapled to the front of your paper.

_____Use less than 25% quotations. A failure to do so will result in a 25% reduction of your grade.

_____Check your paper in DRAFT on safe assign before the due date to check for plagiarism. Any instance of fraud or substantial plagiarism will result in a ZERO on the assignment. Any instance of incidental plagiarism will be considered on a case by case basis, but may result in a zero on whatever criteria in which the plagiarism occurred.

_____ 2-4 pages.

Turning in your paper (Must turn in a hard AND electronic copy, or you will receive a zero):
