SOCIAL MEDIA 10

Social Media

William O Evans

Post University

Social media are tools that are computer-mediated and allow individuals to make, exchange and share opinion, information, videos, audios and pictures in networks and virtual communities. A collection of applications that are computer based and are built on technological and ideological foundations of Web 2.0 that enables people to create and exchange their generated contents is what is known as social media (Al-Deen, 2012).

Moreover , this social media depend on web based and mobile technologies to make interactive platforms that are highly interactive by which individuals and the community as whole share, give opinion, discuss and even change their generated contents. Social media have led to introduction of pervasive and substantial changes to the exchange of information between communities, businesses, individuals and organizations (Fuchs, 2015). The changes that social media have brought are the focus of the new field of studies and techno self .

In comparison of social media with traditional media , many differences are observed. These differences include the quality, frequency, reach, usability, permanence and immediacy. These are the effects that have been brought by the use of internet. Some of these impacts have mostly been positive however some are negative to the way the people live.

Currently, social media is the most site that is used by people on internet as compared to other sites. For example in the United States, the total time spend on social media sites has increased by 99 percent. It was approximately one hundred and twenty one billion minutes in July 2012 as compared to sixty six billion minutes in July 2011. In the case of the content contributors, the benefits that individuals get in their participation on social media have increased beyond the need to build reputation and monetary income and creation of jobs opportunities.

The use of social media has affected the culture of people a lot. It has influenced major changes in the way people do things. People are now changing from traditional way of communication to the use of social media. With the world moving to digital and with availability of internet access, people have changed from traditional methods to the new “digital” methods. The use of social media has brought both positive and negative influences on the culture of the United States.

Social media has made people interact with their friends and follower everywhere in the world. This has made the world look like just a small village (Al-Deen, 2012). People in the United States have interacted with people around the world and they have changed their cultures. U.S citizens now can makes friendships online. They have friends all over the world who they have never met but they interact through social media. It is very easy to hear them saying that they have several friends in a foreign country. They have made social media their meeting points and also dating site. This is different from what they initially did by use of letters and mail whereby they could communicate to the people whom they know.

Through social media, people are able to share videos. This has made people interact with people from other countries. Due to this, the traditional stereotypes in the United States have begun to decline. People are able to give their opinions on these videos and engage on discussions and are even able to have conferences (Papacharissi, 2010). Many people are using YouTube and are able to share videos. This has been a driving change around the globe.

Business culture in the United States has also been changed by the social media. Businesses have changed their ways of marketing, trade promotion, advertisement and communication among other activities. They are now using social media to do these activities. For example, businesses are able to advertise their goods or job vacancies through Facebook, twitter, YouTube or Whatsup. This has enabled the information to reach many people within a short time.

In education, social media has enabled people to discuss important topics and enlarge their personal knowledge. They are able to make new discoveries than they knew before. Through social media, students in the United States are able to interact with students from foreign countries and know about different discoveries and information on their countries.

In politics, social media has led to a big change. Political aspirants including presidential candidates have now started using social media in their campaigns. Through this, they have been able to reach many youths (wood, 2010). This have made many young people in the United States to get more involved in politics than ever. For example, in the last united states’ presidential elections, social media was widely used in campaigns.

Despite of social media having positive influence on the culture of people in the United States, it has also negative influences. It has made people hide behind screens and has limited face to face interaction. It has made people in the U.S to feel that they are social even without having to go out and socialize with other people. It has also made people to have a feeling that they have friends without doing anything to build the relationship. For example, the friends someone may have on Facebook friend list he may not ever meet them face to face yet he claims to be their friend.

Many relationships in the United States have broken over social media. Facebook has made people cheat or do that sometimes go beyond boundaries of a relationship. For example, chatting with a sweetheart you have not seen for some time. If someone forgets to log out the account and his or her love or wife come across the account, he gets what one chats on Facebook. This can lead to breakage of marriages or relationships (Wood, 2010).

Social media has played major role in change of behavior of youths. Through various Media such as twitter, YouTube, Facebook among others, they are able to share dirty pictures and videos such as pornographic ones. This has led to many youths in the United States in engage in sex and even homosexuality. Chats through these social media has made them influence each other on bad things (Fuchs, 2015). The influence can even come from someone from a foreign country and have a big impact on the life on a youth in the United States.

Through various pages on these social media, people have been influence to engage in bad practices such as devil worshipping, illuminati and criminal movements. Through social media, the youths have been influence to engage in these activities. As the use of social media continue to increase day by day, these practices are also increasing making the nation look dirty (Papacharissi, 2010).

However, the effects of social media have been somewhat balanced in the United States. In fact, the influence is more positive than negative. It has brought positive effects than negative effects. If someone uses social media on the best way, it can be of a big benefit to the society. As the use of social media is growing in the United States, the life of people is changing.

The way people do things has greatly change and improved. People no longer struggle to pass their information. The culture has moved from traditional methods to more digitalized methods. Social media has played a major role in this. It has generally improved the life styles of people .

insert comma

combine to make one introduction

its not clear what you are arguing regarding social media and its influence. Are you arguing that it has had a positive influence? Or a negative one? You need a thesis that outright states the position you intend to argue and prove.

While you can offer comparision/contrast as means to support and show your argument, your body paragraphs should begin with a topic sentence that restates your position and the reason you are going to prove/show within the body paragraph.

Ex: One way social media has had a positive influence on America/society is . . . .

Awkward. Social media is not a site; it’s a category, a term. You may have to clarify the exact social media platforms or sites you are referring to. Providing examples to show what you mean in order to prove your argument is great! Social Media can obviously refer to FB, Twitter, IG, Vine . .and I’m sure there are others that I don’t use/know about.

spent

where is this data/statistics from? I’d cite this information.

influenced

overall your body paragraphs/arguments are a bit brief/choppy. They all also don’t connect back to a thesis/argument. They don’t all contain support/examples for your position and some read more like an informational “what is social media and what can it do/what it does?” rather than arguing and proving and showing that social media platforms have had a particular influence.

For your final draft, one you choose a particular side/position, make sure to also address and refute the opposing side/position. Take a look at the resources in the unit and that I uploaded for different ways to organize.

is this the conclusion? I thought the previous paragraph was? I’m a bit confused here.
