Consciousness
The state of being conscious is one of the states whose sense has been intensely philosophically debated. Perhaps its sense may not readily be established as there are different intricate ways through which the brain works. Nonetheless, from the numerous definition given to the term consciousness and the myriad of views about it given by philosophers, a connection can be established which the gives it a definition. In line with this, it can be pointed out that consciousness is the state that implies accountability for one’s actions. Consciousness is the state where one’s mind engages in though with which is coupled with sense from the individual’s perspective. For instance, in thinking of current or past events, one relates the thought to what triggers them. Similarly, a mentally retarded will think of eating relating it to the sensation triggered by hunger.
It is, nonetheless, difficult to explain what consciousness is as given points provide for the mind to be active while one is, in fact, in no control. For instance, in sleep, one is rarely able to connect their minds with the immediate environment around them. Consciousness allows for control of given aspects of our lives yet in given instances, it appears to be beyond us to control our minds with regards to our immediate environment. Consciousness may therefore be asserted to come from the need to map control of life’s activities with one’s mind. For instance, it is noted that it within one’s capabilities to generate serenity around themselves and such inspire activities such as Yoga and meditation. However, it will be difficult to explain consciousness with precision as given states where the mind continually operates are beyond a person’s control.
Hindu Vedanta explanation of consciousness provides that realizing a state of consciousness is the ability to perceive the ultimate reality. This provides that when one gets to the point when they view the world as it is and relate to it in that context then they are in a conscious state. This is notably a plausible argument given the ways in which the mind wonders at the instances it is beyond one’s control. However, this explanation of consciousness further provides that a state of consciousness can hardly be realized.
Numerous meaningful processes take place in life whether one is aware of them or not. For a mentally retarded person to know they have to eat to get rid of their hunger, they have to be aware of the hunger and the action they are about to take. However, does this imply that they are always in control of their actions? Relating to the world as it is an important aspect of life. Despite this, it arguably leads to the assertion that consciousness is a fundamental part of the universe. This is perhaps made apparent by a number of facts.
The human mind is more intricate when compared to that of other animals. Most animals live in the moments in their lives and this is perhaps what generates a difference. Animals (human beings included) in most cases live on the instinct to survive. However, human beings have more complex ways of thinking that make their conscious special. That the mind engages in other things that are aside from one’s instantaneous experiences makes apparent the complexity. Nonetheless, this does not imply lack of consciousness in non-human-animal beings as most engage with their thoughts as pertains to the need for survival.
Consciousness is important as it drives many aspects of the human life. In the event that human beings were not conscious, there would be a significant aspect of lack of coordination, which would result in chaos. In fact, it is not possible for human beings to lack conscious as determines almost all their actions that sustain life. Most of the non-western ideas provide that it is integral that people relate to the world as it is rather than as they view it. This generally makes apparent a relation with the provided notion of consciousness. Perhaps one of the reasons why consciousness is regarded from the perspective of reality is because it draws one to the moment there are in. Meditation, yoga and even death detach one from the real world hence eliminating consciousness.
