How to Maintain Compliance
While the finer points of employment law can be complicated, there are some simple things you can do to maintain a reasonable level of compliance.
• First, pay close attention to the way you communicate with employees as well as what you communicate.
• Second, make employment decisions based on the criteria of the position rather than on personal
opinion.
• Third, watch for patterns that may indicate how policies or procedures differentially impact on groups.
• Fourth, treat all reports of incidents seriously and equally.
• Finally, think critically.
Remember that employment laws cover a great deal of the work relationship and environment. When you make decisions, consider what legislation might apply, what negative effects may occur, and what alternatives you have. Your decisions should be based on the analysis of various viewpoints and all relevant information, using resources at your disposal to assist with the interpretation of current law and best practices.
