Strategies and life-skills that examine the relationship of safety, social-emotional health, healthy eating, physical activity, disease prevention, alcohol, tobacco, and other drug use to health and learning; Covered in Course Outcome # 1 and 2. Assessed in health assignments number 1 and 2 |
Description of the assignment:
Please research the relationship between one of the CDC risk behaviors, health, and learning. You will prepare a presentation for a group of hypothetical parents and school board members where you convince them of the importance of health education based on your research. The relationships may be direct (physical activity increases brain function) or indirect (when students are emotionally healthy they have better grades). Many of the links between these behaviors and students’ health and learning are indirect and therefore people are unaware how important health (teaching health) is to students’ academic success. You can begin looking through the research links I provided for you in the “school board packet” but should find your own, current resources too.
Two components of the assignment
Presentation: You will create a 15-minute presentation that you could give to a group of parents and board members that will address the link between your topic, health, learning and the need for health education. You WILL be giving this presentation in class, but you also need to include a hard copy of all the information you intend to cover during the presentation. (Either submit a separate page as a script or write in PowerPoint notes on the slides). Remember that your presentation needs to be interesting so it should not be a straight lecture. You will need to develop a rationale (reason for the need for this presentation) and an action message for your audience.
For example: If I were focusing on violence and injury prevention, I would research bullying/violence and show how this behavior and/or experiences for the students will/has affected their health and their learning. The effect on learning may be that the student feels unsafe and therefore does not pay attention or begins missing school. Both of these situations would affect the students’ ability to learn. Then I would address how health education will combat this. I would also create a take home message (action needed) for both parents and school board members. For parents: talk to their children about the behavior –give them some tips on talking with their children. For school board members: encourage them to develop a policy that would address the problem (give suggestive ideas for addressing the issue).
PowerPoint: Create a power point presentation to use as a guide during your presentation. PowerPoint slides should not include all of the information you plan on saying, so in order for me to grade your presentation you will also need to include your script (word for word) with the PowerPoint. You can do this in a separate document or in the notes section of the power point slides. You will need to make sure you use enough detail so that I can understand the intent of the information. You cannot just use headings like “Bullying” and beneath it use words like “how it affects their learning”. You will need to be very specific about the information that you find through research and what you intend to tell your audience.
Handout: A 1-page handout with the highlights of your presentation and your take home message. The purpose of this handout is for your audience to continue to think about the issue after leaving the meeting and to give them some action steps for addressing the issue. The handout should be interesting, informative, and support/add to your presentation. Please bring enough copies for each member of class (including me).
Underlying Premise of the Course and this assignment:
· “You can’t educate a child who isn’t healthy, and you can’t keep a child healthy who isn’t educated.” --M. Jocelyn Elders.
· It has been shown that prevention is less expensive than treatment of health problems in our society. (Out of $1.00 spent in health care in this country, five cents is spent for prevention while ninety-five cents are spent for treatment).
· “When schools do not deal with children’s health by design, they deal with it by default.” (Marx, Wooley, and Northrop, Health is Academic.)
