LABORATORY REPORT FORMAT INTRODUCTION

� Include your name, the date the lab was performed, the names of your lab partners � The title of the experiment � Write a short paragraph stating the purpose of the experiment, what problem you are trying to solve or

what theory you are trying to prove. If you know what the results are supposed to be state them here. Otherwise, hypothesize or predict what you expect the results to be.

MATERIALS AND METHODS � In your own words, describe a brief step by step account of the procedure you used in the experiment. � List the materials you used in the experiment � Note any problems encountered during the performance of the experiment

RESULTS (DATA) � Present the data in tables and make sure to have the correct units and labels on your tables � Present the data in such a way that you could see some trends that are relevant to the experiment � Include the raw data collected and signed in the back of the report as an appendix (the raw data does

not have to be neat) � You will be graded on the clear presentation of the data

ANALYSIS � The second most important section of the report should include an analysis of the raw data collected. � You must present the analysis in additional tables or with appropriate graphs � Any data fitting should be presented here including fitting equations and what the equations mean to

the experiment. � If you know what the result is supposed to be, compare your result with the known value. � You will be graded on the thoroughness of your analysis, clear presentation and presenting any

quantitative error analyses relevant to the experimental parameters. � Graphs and tables should be labeled properly

CONCLUSIONS � Summarizes the essential data used to draw conclusions and the conclusions follow data (not wild

guesses or leaps of logic) don’t just re-state the results � Discusses applications of experiment ("real world" connections) � Hypothesis is rejected or accepted based on the data if there was a hypothesis to test. � Discuss any sources of error, and answer any lab report questions in this section. � Please do not say HUMAN ERROR or say that “I LEARNED A LOT IN THE LAB”, or that “YOU REALLY

ENJOYED THE LAB”. You are writing a technical document so stick with the purpose of the experiment
