Gender roles and stereotypes cause social conflict and imbalance in modern societies. Gender roles refer to the duties, responsibilities and expectations from individuals in a community based on their gender (Wertenbruch,2013). On the other hand gender sterotypes refer to the generalization made about one gender in terms of abilities, roles and attributes. Both gender roles and stereotypes are basically socially and culturally established (Wertenbruch 2013). Studies indicate that gender role and stereotypes lower production and contribute to social conflict at both domestic and commercial level. It is very unfortunate that gender stereotypes and gender roles are still dominant in the 21ST century. According to Wertenbruch (2013), the perception that some duties are meant for men and others for women is a common phenomenon in many parts of the world. Men still believe that they are a stronger gender and they deserve the best in the society then women who are perceived to be a weaker gender (Patton,2000). The concept of gender equality has not been fully welcomed in some communities especially in the developing countries. Consequently, duties are allocated to the members of the community based on their gender. This subsequently results to social conflict and imbalance as members of every gender fight for more recognition and appreciation in the society(Patton,200). This paper provides a holistic explanation on how gender roles and stereotypes cause social conflict and imbalance in modern societies.
