3. A round bar is made up of steel, aluminum and copper. Determine the radius of each portion

necessary in order to carry the given load, if the allowable stresses in the steel, aluminum and

copper are 20,000, 10,000 and 5,000 psi respectively.

4. A surveyor’s chain, 100-ft standard length, is 0.24 inches longer because of an increase in

temperature. Determine the average thermal strain for this chain.
