As you complete your weekly reading, answer the questions below.

Please review the following writing guidelines prior to answering the questions:

· Remember to respond to the questions using your own words.

· Do NOT copy responses from the textbook, internet or other resources.  This is plagiarism, which is illegal, and may result in a failing grade.

Part 1: An organism is born, lives, and then dies. Similarly, a cell has a life cycle.

After reading pages 164 – 165 in your textbook, outline the six stages of the cycle of a cell.

Part 2: The portion of the life cycle that involves the separation of the nuclear (DNA) material of the cell is termed mitosis. Two cells that are formed from one during this type of division are identical to each other and to their parent cell. So as to understand this complicated process, scientists have identified and named specific events that occur.

After reading pages 166 – 167 in your textbook, outline the six stages of mitosis.

Part 3: Mitotic cell division needs to be finely regulated. The cell cycle has checkpoints that allow problems to be fixed before the cycle continues. Unfortunately things can and do go wrong with the cell cycle.

After reading pages 169 – 171 in your textbook, discuss the following.

10 points

Discuss the relationship between the terms Neoplasm and Tumor.

Discuss the relationship between the terms Cancer and Metastasis.

Part 4: Asexual reproduction (mitosis) is efficient and very necessary. It enables a cell to make exact copies of itself for the purpose of repair, replacement and growth. Sexual reproduction is also very necessary for the success of living organisms.

After reading page 175 in your textbook, state the advantage sexual reproduction imparts to an organism over asexual reproduction.

Part 5: To understand the process of meiosis some basic terminology needs to be known.

After reading pages 176 – 177 in your textbook, define the following terms: Somatic cell, Germ cell, Allele, Haploid, Gamete and Fertilization

Part 6: Meiosis is a type of nuclear division that both reduces the number of chromosomes by half in the newly formed cells, and results in chromosomes that were formed by recombining the chromosomes from the parent cell.

After reading pages 178 – 179 in your textbook, identify the phase of meiosis where each of the following events occurs:

Recombination of homologous chromosomes
