The purpose of the individual project is build individual skill so all students are prepared to fully engage

and ready to practice application skills on the team project.

The individual project has 3 parts:

1) Write a scope statement.

2) Develop a two level Work Breakdown Structure.

3) Develop a network diagram and determine the critical path. Use your expanded MS Project to

illustrate how quality and scope management are related.

Please keep your scope statement for this assignment very simple and concise. Pick a project you know

something about. Remember, this assignment is about building skill and not doing research. For

example, because I had my General Contractor’s license, I know a little bit about construction projects.

Therefore, a project to replace the old, worn carpeting in my home living room with wood floors might

be easy for me to visualize but require research for someone without that experience.

IP1: A scope statement for this assignment that I would score for full credit could be as simple as 1

sentence if it includes elements found in the triple constraint. For example, the scope of my project is to

replace my living room flooring with a sustainable product my husband and I both like for under $5000

before the end of this calendar year.

2.5 possible points. Feedback will be provided for all partial points so students may incorporate the

feedback into the next assignment. The rubric for this first assignment will be graded considering the

following requirements:

- All three elements of triple constraint included: Scope, time, budget.

- Concise. No more than 3 sentences.

- On-time into dropbox.

- You must pick something different from the floor replacement project.

IP2: MS Project 1

This assignment requires breaking your project into tasks and building a work breakdown structure in

the MS Project software tool. Therefore, if I were to continue from my example of the floor project, I

might break the work down by phase or project component or both. An example of a WBS could look

like the following:

Objective: Replace living room flooring with a sustainable product my husband and I both like for under

$5000 by Dec. 31.

1.0 Planning

1.1 Set-aside $5000 from checking account

1.2 Screen materials for husband

1.3 Select product

1.4 Order product

1.5 Negotiate resource plan

1.6 Approve project plan

2.0 Floor Prep

2.1 Stage required materials and tools in garage

2.2 Remove and stage furnishings

2.3 Remove old carpeting

2.4 Dispose of trash (sustainability considerations)

2.5 Prep flooring

2.6 Plan for next phase

3.0 Execute

3.1 Procure new flooring materials

3.2 Layout pattern

3.3 Etc.

3.4 Etc.

IP3: MS Project 2 will build upon the same project submitted for the previous two assignments.

The rubrics for IP2 and IP3 are posted with their respective assignments in the Dropbox and also in the

course contents file.
