Introduction to the Assignment

Directions for the Assignment:
1. Identification of each column--
Column A are wages in nominal terms
Column B is industry: 0 is manufacturing, 1 is services, 2 is government sector
Column C is occupations within each industry
Column D is education level. Anything above 12 would college and anything 16 or more is graduate degree
Column E is whether the person lives in the south (1) or not (0)
Column F is nonwhite (1) or not nonwhite (0)
Column G is Hispanic (1) or not Hispanic (0)
Column H is female (1) or not female or male (0)
Column I is the number of years of experience
Column J is married (1) or not married (0)
Column K is the age of the person
Column L is a member of a union (1) not a member of a union (0)
2. The questions for the assignment.
a. Prepare descriptive statistics of wages in the South and not in the South. What are the differences between the two regions?
b. Prepare descriptive statistics of wages for those in a union or not in the union. What are the differences between the unionized workers and non-unioned workers? Why do you think so?
c. Prepare the descriptives of wages for males and females. What are the differences in wages by gender? What are the reasons for these possible differences?
d. From part c, prepare a confidence interval for wages for men and women. What do the confidence intervals reveal? Explain.
