INT: AT HOME, OUTSIDE THE FRONT DOOR – EVENING
Brian is outside and is looking impatient. He is looking at his watch and is shaking his head.
BRIAN
Hurry up Hanna or we are going to be late.
HANNA
Am coming honey, are you all set?
BRIAN
I am ready already, I was ready a long time ago, I have been waiting for you to get ready so that we can leave before it is too late. We don’t want to be the last ones to arrive. You know how our parents get when any of us is late for dinner.
HANNA
Yeah I know! Them and their dinner rules.
BRIAN
Tell the kids they should be outside by now, once I get into that car, am driving off, and if everyone is not in the car by then, we are leaving without them.
TIFFANY
Am grandpa’s favorite, you can’t leave without me.
BRIAN
Watch me. Tiffany, if you are not out here within the next few minutes, am leaving.
Brian is pacing outside the front door and he doesn’t want to go back into the house as his wife and daughter will take their sweet time. They don’t seem to be in a hurry, suddenly, Tiffany steps outside.
TIFFANY
Do you like my new dress Daddy?
BRIAN
I like it very much sweetheart. Where are your shoes?
TIFFANY
Am going back to wear them daddy, I just thought I should ask you how I look in this dress first. Mommy says that it is too dull and that I should wear something brighter.
BRIAN
You are okay like that dear, you look beautiful. Now hurry up and wear your shoes, we have to go. And tell your mommy that she doesn’t have to wear make-up it’s at night.
HANNA
I heard that.
TIFFANY
Mommy, Daddy is saying……
HANNA
Yeah, I heard every word. Go to your room, get the pink sock and pink shoes and wear them then we go. Right?
TIFFANY
Yes, mommy.
BRIAN
C’mon guys, we really, really have to go. It would be very bad if we arrived after everyone else yet among all my brothers and sisters, we are the ones who live closest to mum and dad. Dad always calls me a late comer, you know how hard I try to prove to him I can be on time darling.
HANNA
You don’t have to worry darling, we can’t arrive after Alfred. Everyone knows he is the late comer in the family.
BRIAN
(laughing) Yeah, he is the late comer. Isn’t he? But that is because he lives miles away.
TIFFANY
Mommy, I will be outside with daddy.
HANNA
Go on sweetheart, am behind you.
Tiffany comes outside and holds his daddy’s hand.
BRIAN
The car is open Tiffy, go right in.
By now, Hanna is ready and steps outside the house wearing black high heel shoes, a white dress and a black trench coat coving her u to her knees. Brian smiles and as they walk towards the car he whispers
BRIAN
You look lovely; I have no regrets for waiting for you, no wander you were taking too long.
FADE OUT.
