Greetings from David McCandless

Hello Everyone,
My name is David McCandless and I am currently pursuing a Masters Degree in Public Relations through Ball State University's online program. I currently work for the U.S. House of Representatives, more specifically Congressman Steve Chabot of Ohio's 1st Congressional District. The district includes the city of Cincinnati and its suburbs. This is my fourth year in this office which I hope leads to more in my career as I thoroughly enjoy serving our constituents in a variety of ways with help with federal agencies and community outreach. Eventually, I would like to take on a communications role with this office or another (hence the Public Relations program). I am married and hope to have kids one day, in addition to my current dog and three cats. This is my final class to complete for the Masters Degree in addition to my creative project which I am currently taking in addition to this course. Through past classes, I have learned a great deal about the importance of research in this field whether it be done through quantitative, qualitative, or other means. In terms of education, I graduated with a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Political Science from Miami University (OH) in 2009. It may sound simplistic, but one of my goals for this class is to simply become a better researcher. I would like to better understand techniques and methods while paying greater attention to detail. Thankfully, I am taking this course with my creative project so I can both learn more about research while performing it in a meaningful way. My concern is how well or not I will absorb the material and methods, meaning I may have to put in some extra effort! I am more of a traditionalist when it comes to learning but I have come to enjoy online education. I look forward to getting to know you all this semester and hope we can have some meaningful discussions! If you ever need to reach me, my email is: [email protected] and my cell is: 440-590-5094. Happy New Year everyone!

Wow, David. Your job sounds very interesting, it must be great to serve the people of the greater Cincinnati area as well as the rest nation in Congress. Do you have any interest in running for office yourself at some point? If you do, I'm sure the experiences working in a congressional office will help in those endeavors. I'm sure your employment experiences, coupled with the Masters in Public Relations, will help you land a communications position. I've had some success in altering my career path from serving local governments in Parks and Recreation agencies to my Academic Advising role now, and my nearly finished Masters degree was a big help. I look forward to working with you this semester.

Thanks for the note Carl! It has been interesting. It started off working on the campaign side in the 2010 midterms but now I'm on the official side of things. I doubt I'll run for office but who knows- I mainly enjoy working behind the scenes. Local government sounds really fun but tough at the same time. At least you get to see a lot get done I would image as things tend to get clogged up and the federal level. Academic advising sounds awesome, at the school level? Take care!
David

Hi David!
Congrats on being so close to finishing your master's degree. I'm also a PR master's student, but I'm completing the program here on campus. This is also my last class, and I'm taking it with my creative project course as well! What are you doing your project on? I'd love to hear details! Also, who is your advisor?
Also, interestingly enough I have family in Cincinnati. I visit quite often. Are you originally from Ohio?
Nice to meet you. Good luck this semester.
Talk to you soon!

Hi Natalie!
Thanks so much for the congrats and same to you! Its been a long process doing six credit hours a semester. How is Ball State, I have never been so I just want to make sure its there! Just kidding... I am working on a project that will ultimately turn out to be a comprehensive strategy guide based on Latino voting behavior, ideology, and party identification. I am currently working on it with Dr. Blom. Do you know him? What are you working on? I am originally from Cleveland (Go Browns, Cavs, and Indians) but have migrated south since going to Miami. What part of Cincinnati may I ask? Good luck as well! It should be a fun semester!
Best,
David
