Scenario
The Association of Glass Manufacturers’ Annual meeting is in Honolulu, Hawaii in 2 months. Planning is well under way for the 3-day event. The meeting begins on Wednesday evening with an opening reception at 7 p.m. for all 300 attendees and their guests. Thursday begins with breakfast and a general session for the 300 meeting attendees only. Several breaks during the day, including a sit down luncheon from 12 p.m.–1:30 p.m. Thursday the group is on their own for dinner. The last day, Friday, begins with breakfast, a mid-morning break and ends with a working lunch. In all, this food and beverage bill is expected to average $80,000.
Diane is very excited about this meeting because she will get an opportunity to work with Martha, one of her friends from her hometown, who recently moved to Hawaii to be Director of Catering at the hotel. Martha will be given credit (including a bonus) from the revenue earned on this group. She sent Diane the contract outlining all the details, the number of rooms, and all food and beverage function dates and times. Martha is pleased with her negotiation skills as she steered her friend to the high- end items on the menu.
Three days before the contract is due back, Martha calls Diane to follow up and is told there is an issue. She has signed the contract and was ready to fax it back when her boss, tells her that a different property is willing to give them a better deal with substantially lower rates and comparable offerings.
