Think about Gothic Cathedrals; consider the astonishment of the pilgrim at first seeing the Gothic style, and the size, presence, and importance of Gothic architectural achievements. Reflect on the didactic nature of Gothic art used in architecture, including both "sermons in stone" and the luminescence of stained glass.

Consider the Gothic style based on the visual qualities of cathedrals and Abbot Suger's philosophy. Write a detailed, descriptive essay in which you identify and describe the appearance of a Gothic cathedral to a thirteenth-century viewer.
