Patience gave a good explanation of inhalation and exhalation and how connects with Boyle's Law. And with describing asthma she connected it to Boyle's Law very nice. Bronchitis also is related and is an inflammation of the lining of the bronchial tubes, which carry air to and from the lungs. People with bronchitis often cough up thickened mucus. Can be viral or bacteria infection. The inflammation of the bronchi is caused by inhaling toxic irritants or cigarette smoke. Can be acute asthma that develops fast but it clears in 14 days. Has the same symptoms as a cold: sneezing, coughing, pain upon inhalation, and fever. Then we have chronic bronchitis where the exposure to the irritants was long term, doing substantial damage to the bronchi. There will be large amounts of mucus in the bronchi obstructing the air exchange, along with a cough lasting 3 months or more. Those will do permanent changes with the bronchial wall that will thicken. The lumen will become narrower, and there will be increase production in mucin-secretin cells of the bronchi. Chronic bronchitis is one of reasons for COPD and emphysema. Both situations makes it difficult to breath. During inhalation the bronchi being narrow will bring less oxygen for the exchange, as well as exhaling will be harder. Airways become obstructed lead to frequent infections.
