QUESTION 1

A pin-jointed frame constructed of four bars of equal axial rigidity AE supports a load P at joint E with an angle of 30◦ from the vertical direction as shown in FIGURE Q1.

(a) Employing the unit load method, determine the forces in the bars as a function of load P. [30 marks]

(b) Employing the unit load method, determine the horizontal displacement at point E as a function of load P and axial rigidity AE. [20 marks]

QUESTION 2

Consider the structure from FIGURE Q2 where there is a beam with non-uniform cross-section and two bars connecting the beam at points B and C. The cross-sectional geometries for the two sections of the beam are described in FIGURE Q2. The beam has applied a uniform distributed load q = 50 kN/m and Young’s modulus E = 200 GPa.

(a) Employing the stationary of the complementary virtual work determine the area of the cross-section of the two bars such that the maximum allowable deflection at the beam’s tip (point C) is 1 mm (Note: assume the same area for the two bars). [50 marks]
