Used when we have two samples and every participant is only in one sample
A between-groups design
Paired sample t-tests are used when we have two samples and every participant is in both samples
A within-groups design

Enter Data into SPSS
2 Variables:
Group (1 or 2)
Number of words remembered
Running an independent t-test in SPSS
Analyze → compare means → independent sample t-test →
choose your ‘data’ (your dependent variable) and move it to the “test variable(s)” box on the right
Move your independent variable into the “grouping variable” box below this
Click on ‘define groups’
Click on specified values, enter both 1 and 2 separately
Click continue, click OK
