Essay Guidelines
Your essay should be about 5000 – 6000 words in length, on a topic in labour economics. Thus it should be labour, not another field in economics, and economics, not another discipline.
To select a topic, browse through the text to find a topic that interests you. The intention is that you deal with a topic in more depth than you find in the textbook; just summarizing what you find in the text is not enough. You will find one source of information in the references at the end of the text for the relevant chapter. Another source that is useful is Google Scholar http://scholar.google.com/, that permits you to search for scholarly work on the topic that you pick. Just be careful that the sources that you use come from economics sources or journals, not from other disciplines. Some of the sources that you come across may be technical and difficult to understand, but you should at least be able to understand the conclusions that the authors reach. The quality of your essay will be heavily dependent on the quality of the sources that you use. About half a dozen sources would usually be appropriate.
This is an undergraduate essay, not a Ph.D. thesis, so you are not expected to develop particularly original ideas or conduct sophisticated empirical research. One common mistake is to select a topic that is too broad, so that it is not possible to say anything interesting about it. Another is to take a strong stand on a question, without empirical evidence to back up your position. You should try to survey what is known about the topic that you choose, and present different views and analyses where differences exist. Think of your position as that of a judge weighing the evidence, rather than as an advocate. You will be evaluated on your presentation of the relevant economics analysis, and as long as your exposition is clear your facility with the English language will not be an issue.
