Language Log Instructions
Language Logs
The Language Log is a diary of the grammatical errors you find in your other writings for the course. Sometimes I will underline sentences in your writings that you can use for the Language Log; normally, though, you and a tutor/friend/conversation partner should pick out the sentences.
Language Logs must be typed.
Guidelines:
1) Pick out 5 sentences that have significant grammatical errors.
2) In your Language Log, write out the sentences in their original, incorrect form. Underline the errors in the sentence.
3) Rewrite the sentences, correcting the error(s) . Use any grammar handbook to help you identify and correct your errors. Underline the corrected parts of the sentence.
4) After you rewrite the error(s), identify the error(s).
5) Finally, comment on how you can avoid making this type of error in your future
writings.
Sample Language Log Entry :
Original, incorrect sentence: John and I likes to go to the movies.
Corrected sentence: John and I like to go to the movies.
Error: Agreement.
I can avoid this error in the future by paying attention to the subject of my sentence. If the subject is third-person singular, my present tense verb will have an "s." Because my subject in this sentence is plural (John and I), I shouldn't use the "s" at the end of my verb.
