Avatar 2009
Avatar 2009 is a sci-fi movie, which was directed by James Cameron. The film stars are Sam Worthington, Zoe Saldana and Sigourney Weaver. One of Cameron's past movies that he is known for is titanic .The Movie Avatar can be considered a good sci-fi movie. Because of the quality of the story, its set design and visual effects.
Avatar simply tells a story of a world called Pandora, a vigorously forested moon circling the planet Polyphemus situated in Alpha Centauri star system. The main point of the story is respecting Mother Nature, other cultures and protecting Natural Habitat. The film is set in the year 2148, and the world common resources are totally developed. The Na'vi live in Pandora and they follow their culture that known as the Omaticaya .The heroes of the movie are: Jake Sully played by Sam Worthington, after his twin brother death, Jake offers to take his job as part of a science group on Pandora.Neytiri played by Zoe Saldana, a little girl of the family's founder Eytukan the father, and Mo’at as the mother. People would like the story because Humans in the movie are trying to destroy the Na’vi’s and their culture to get what they want, so what happened in the end, a war between Humans and Na’vi’s. The enemy is Parker Giovanni; he started the war with his team. Additionally, they destroyed the Na'vi's holy tree (the tree of souls), to get to one of the biggest stores of unobtanium.
Another thing what makes Avatar a good movie its set design. The set design is considered a work of art. When someone think about set design the first thing comes to his mind is how an avatar is created. The world Pandora. The floating mountains, The AMP suits and every creature in the movie. “Amount of primary research would go into planning a set design, using paintings, photography’s and other evidence of period or contemporary life, artistic license would prevail the essence of a place or period in the middle zone.”(Street, Sarah)
The whole movie is made with visual effects; the extraordinary use of lights and different colors draws people’s attention. For example, the waterfalls and the sky are introduced with special use of lights and colors. The color of the Avatar body and how it is created to match Jake body. “The first part of Jake’s voyage for this is, above all, a boy’s rocking adventure, if one populated by the usual tough Cameron chicks takes him from a wheelchair into a 10-foot, blue-skinned Na’vi body. At once familiar and pleasingly exotic, the humanoid Na’vi come with supermodel dimensions slender hips, a miniature-apple rear; long articulated digits, the better to grip with; and the slanted eyes and twitchy ears of a cat. The gently curved stripes that line their blue skin, the color of twilight, bring to mind the markings on mackerel tabby cats. For Jake his avatar, which he hooks into through sensors while lying in a remote pod in a semiconscious state, is at first a giddy novelty and then a means to liberation.” (Manohla Dargis, 2009), including the reality camera system, to film in three dimensions-3D.” An Eden in three dimensions, that is. In keeping with his maximalist tendencies, Mr. Cameron have shot Avatar in 3-D because many theaters are not equipped to show 3-D, the movie will also be shown in the usual 2, an experiment that serves his material beautifully. This isn’t the 3-D of the 1950s or even contemporary films, those flicks that try to give you a virtual poke in the eye with flying spears. Rather Mr. Cameron uses 3-D to amplify the immersive experience of spectacle cinema. Instead of bringing you into the movie with the customary tricks, with a widescreen or even Imax image filled with sweeping landscapes and big action, he uses 3-D seemingly to close the space between the audience and the screen. He brings the movie to you.”(Manohla Dargis, 2009)
In conclusion, movie Avatar obviously presents James Cameron's efforts and the time taken to make persuasive story with great visual impact. It was a good sci-fi movie because of the quality of the story. I think the movie is sending a message to people to respect Mother Nature and other Cultures, even if we are in different world. I haven’t seen a Sci –Fi movie like it. The set Design and the visual effects of the movie were wonderful and creative.
