SF 345 SMS Research Project Description The SMS research project is a summative assignment in which you will prepare a five- page written summary of your selected topic and prepare a print-ready electronic template for a poster presentation. The topic to be explored is to be selected by you, posted to the Discussion Board, and approved by the instructor no later than September 26th. I strongly encourage you to select your topics prior to that date and to begin the process. This assignment may be submitted early.
The completed project (paper and poster) is due before class, Tuesday November 25th
Topics You may select any topic that is of interest to you and is related to the course subject – safety assurance in an aviation safety management system. Frequently students select a significant air carrier accident as their topic – this is not appropriate for this course. I would encourage you to consider other, broader topics and not limit yourself to a single historical accident. All topics must be approved by the instructor and posted on the discussion board. Topic approval is first come, first served – no duplication of topics please. Paper The written portion of the assignment is to be a five-page paper, formatted in APA style, summarizing your topic. The writing is to be in collegiate level, standard American English. I have posted an example template on Blackboard for you to review. This will also result in a course grade of F. Seriously, don’t do it. I catch at least one person every semester and the crying is really awkward when I explain that they have failed the class. Let’s not have an awkward moment. ☺
Poster The poster is to be completed in accordance with the PowerPoint design template poster on Blackboard. Please pay attention to spelling, formatting, and overall design. The quality of the presentation, as well as the content, will be assessed. The poster is to be submitted electronically via the link in Blackboard. Please do not make a physical poster! Participation Each student is required to attend the poster session during class on December 4th. Your posters will have been printed and hung. Each student will have the opportunity to present their topic and respond to questions from the class. Attendance for the poster sessions mandatory and constitutes 10% of your SMS Project grade. Rubric A rubric for the assignment is posted to Blackboard. This shows the grade weighting of each of the elements of the assignment (paper, presentation, content), the requirements of each element, and the criteria for earning a score in each. I recommend reviewing this well before submission to ensure that you have completed all areas fully and completely for the best grade.
