Argument/Birthright

Illegal immigration has been a huge financial problem for the United States for many years. Children born in the United States have automatic citizenship, even if the parents are here illegally. It costs millions of dollars to catch, process, and deport the thousands of illegal immigrants that are apprehended, one of reason the fourteen amendments should be change. I believe Congress should change birthright citizenship laws to exclude children of illegal immigrants from becoming automatic citizens.

In fact, illegal immigrants and their U.S. born children currently account for 75 to 80 percent of our annual population growth. Illegal Immigrate accounted for three-quarters of population growth during the decade. (1) The fourteenth amendment to me is outdated and was not intended that all children born in the U.S. to illegal immigrants should become citizens. The fourteenth amendment was written after the Civil War; at a time when America had brought African slaves over to this country and who at the end of the war had been freed. The concept of birthright citizenship stems from a misinterpretation of the fourteenth amendment which was not the intention of it authors.

Furthermore, Illegal immigrant count on state funded healthcare. The abuse has grown to the point that automatic birthright citizenship, should no longer be granted in the United States, as it costs billions of dollars. Many illegal alien mothers risk their own lives to cross our borders with the intention of having their children in America. The cost of prenatal care, delivery and post-partum care annually costs upwards of 42 million. (2) Illegal immigrants are taking advantage of American healthcare and benefits. While American are being denied healthcare because they make too much money to qualify for assistance, but still pay millions of dollars in taxes that are given to illegal immigrants children. I don’t know how this makes sense, the fourteenth amendment rewards illegal immigrants by letting their children become U.S citizens while American pay the price of living in the U.S for birthright children.

Illegal immigrants cost the state education system even more money every year uneducated illegal immigrants regardless of heritage or ethnicity, who have little interest in education, generally end up with poorly educated children. While many of these children speak both Spanish and English, they still have to take English as a second Languages class (ESL) to keep up with their American counterparts in school.

In conclusion the fourteenth amendment was not intended to take advantage of American it was to abolish slaver. By not having stricter laws on birthright citizenship, the United State has taken advantage of its own citizen, because they cannot regulate population, government spending and education.
