1. LAST MAJOR ESSAY ASSIGNMENT
You will make eight major points, showing eight connections between life and work. Like the first and second essay, keep this orderly. Take us through the major points of the story as a guide rather than the chronological life of the writer.
Your introduction will include the necessary background information about the author to appreciate what you will point out in the body of the essay.
Your THESIS STATEMENT will be phrased as an arguable claim. Take a stand, make a judgment. Let’s assume there is already a connection between the writer and his/her work. What might the writer not have considered? Writing is a way to express oneself, but it is also a thinly veiled disguised of the writer’s psychology, philosophy, spirituality, etc.
WOW! You’ve got some thesis statement to craft, and it may not happen until you finish writing the essay. This is okay. Notice I outline a few major themes: psychology, philosophy, spirituality … make a claim. What connections do you see & how do you see the writer expressing his/her point of view regarding that claim?
Each of your eight body paragraphs will include a first sentence that is your major point – your topic sentence. You will then provide the linkage between fact and fiction (play or story). You decide if you will lead with the fiction (play) and then the fact, OR if you will lead with the fact and then the fiction. You will repeat this formula in the exact same way for the eight body paragraphs.
Each body paragraph will include two direct quotes: one from fiction(play or story) ; one from outside source (research about the author). Follow MLA documentation.
Your conclusion will be a grand statement. What is YOUR point of view concerning this writer? What has the writer revealed unknowingly about themselves? What can YOU say about how writing served this writer’s life? BE BOLD! BE CONFIDENT. MAKE YOUR CLAIM & DARE US TO DISAGREE WITH YOU!
You will include a WORKS CITED page. A minimum of
five outside sources
is required for this essay. You must use three sources from the library’s database (NY TIMES is acceptable). Remember that the plays and story(ies) are its own source and will need to be included in your WORKS CITED and BIBLIOGRAPHY pages.
