Compare and Contrast Essay

Rough Draft Due: 10/21/14

Final Draft Due: 10/28/14

The purpose of this assignment is to develop your ability to meaningfully compare the reading “Being Prey: Surviving a Crocodile Attack” with the video, “Three Things I Learned While My Plane Crashed”(viewed on ted.com www.ted.com/talks/lang/en/ric_elias.html ).  The similarities and differences you identify should illuminate important aspects of the reading and the video – don’t assume that a simple comparison will be interesting in and of itself. Your task is to show why it is interesting to examine these works side-by-side.  For example, do not simply say, “Both people faced death and survived…”, instead, ask yourself what is important about their experiences (either similarities or differences).  Likewise, do not say “one is an essay, the other is a speech…”

Please write 3 pages comparing/contrasting the two experiences.  Possible ideas: the lessons they learned, the language they use to describe the events, the amount of control (or lack thereof) they had over the situation.  Pay particular attention to the grading rubric on Bb.  You will use either Subject-by-Subject or Point-by-Point organization.

If you plan to quote from either the essay or the video, please provide in-text citations.  For the essay, use (author, date, page)= (Plumwood, 2008, p. 77). The page numbers are visible on the reading.  For the video use (author, date) = (Elias, 2011).
