Chapter 10 Role Play Exercise
Seller Instructions In this role play students will assume the role of a business‐to‐business computer salesperson for ITS Solutions Corporation and initiate a phone call with a potential client that has been referred by an existing customer. This type of scenario should be considered a multi‐call selling situation where the buyer will ultimately require an onsite presentation/demonstration. Therefore, students are NOT expected to negotiate or close the deal on this initial call. Instead, students should be attempting to set up a follow‐up appointment to move to the second stage of the presentation. To prepare for the call, students should research a type of computer that they would like to purchase in the future or they have recently purchased. Refer to the “establishing presentation objectives” and “telephone contact” section in the textbook to prepare for your call. Also, you may want to consider using the “cold call script” article posted on BBLearn. 1. Prepare a pre‐call worksheet that contains the following information:
a. Call objectives. List the important objectives what must you attempt to accomplish in this initial call.
b. Call script/guidelines. While you don’t want your call to sound scripted, you should write out and practice what you are going to say during your call. Be prepared to deviate from your script if the buyer moves the conversation in a different direction.
2. Conduct a call (via phone or video conference) with the classmate assigned to you who will serve as the buyer (see
the “Cold Call Matchup” file on BBLearn to see who you will need to call on).
3. Once the call is complete and a follow‐up presentation date has been set, send a confirmation email to the buyer. (NOTE: You do not need to conduct the follow‐up presentation). Remember to use the email guidelines presented in class/textbook.
