Lesson 7 Project: PowerPoint Presentation: Stock Purchase Recommendation

This project supports Student Learning Outcome 2 from your Course Syllabus.

Purpose:

Using the stock information from the lesson 5 project, collaborate with your peers to identify and present the most promising stocks to purchase.

Requirements:

1. For this project, you will be working in teams of 3 students.

2. With your team members:

· Consolidate the spreadsheet data into a single spreadsheet with all the stocks listed.

· Collaboratively, identify 5 rules that you could use to evaluate the stocks

· Apply the rules to each stock in the spreadsheet

· Identify the top 3 stocks recommended for purchase

3. Individually, create a PowerPoint presentation to recommend these stocks to a client

· Include a title slide with your name and the names of your team members

· Select a theme for your presentation

· Identify the stocks evaluated by market sector

· Describe your evaluation process

· Show relevant information and charts from the spreadsheets to support your decision-making process

· Identify the top recommended stocks and explain why they were chosen

· Cite any resources you used to get stock information or evaluation criteria

· Follow the recommendations for creating good presentations

Tips and Preparation:

· The first half of this project is a team project which means that you should work collaboratively on those tasks. You will be assigned to a group within eCampus. To work with your group, click on Group Work in the eCampus menu. You will only see your group. Click on the group name to see the tools. There are 4 tools available:

· Collaboration which allows you to have real-time chats

· File exchange where you can upload your files to share with one another

· Group discussion board which allows for discussions that are not real-time (may be useful if you have a hard time finding times to chat in real-time)

· Group Tasks where you can add tasks and dates for completion to help organize your efforts

Your instructor will be reviewing these group areas to assess your teamwork individually and as a group. All members of the team will be using the same set of rules and stocks for their individual presentations. Groups should make every effort to include all members, but if one member of the group does not participate in a timely manner (i.e. upload their spreadsheet by the deadline, participate in group discussions, etc), the other members may proceed without their input.

· Information about creating rules for expert systems can be found in the book in Chapter 7 on page 311.

· For information on evaluating stocks (to help you with the creation of your rules), you may want to check out:

· Wall Street Journal: How to Evaluate a Stock

· ehow.com: Evaluate stock before you buy

· About.com: Tools of Fundamental Analysis

· Once you create your rules, you may find that you need more information in your spreadsheet, such as additional data or calculations

· Microsoft PowerPoint is a good tool for creating a presentation. Use the help (if needed) to use tools such as templates and transitions to make a professional looking presentation. Here are a couple of website resources with tips on making good presentations:

· Ten Tips for Good Presentations

· Good PowerPoints

· Effective PowerPoints

· Be sure to check your spelling and grammar and correct any errors that it finds.

· Make sure that you 'sell' your recommendations. Show the criteria you used and how each stock evaluated.

· Upon completion of the project, complete the peer evaluation survey. Part of your grade will depend on how well you evaluate your peers and how well your peers evaluate you! (Survey results are confidential)
