Physics  2011  

Final  Projects   •  Should  use  course  concepts  introduced  a8er  the   first  test.   – Kinema=cs  (1D,  2D,  rota=onal)  cannot  be  the  FOCUS   of  the  project  

– The  more  course  concepts  you  can  incorporate,  the   more  interes=ng  your  project  will  be.  

•  Must  include  graphical  analysis  and  uncertainty   calcula=ons  

•  Equipment  and  supplies  should  cost  no  more   than  $10   – Use  cell  phones  for  stopwatches  

Proposal  Format      

•  Group  informa=on   –  Your  group  name   –  List  of  group  members   –  Name  of  group  leader  

•  Project  informa=on   –  Summary  of  what  you  plan  to  do  and  what  you  expect  to  learn  

•  Planned  procedure   •  What  will  you  plot  to  get  a  linear  graph?  

–  What  equa=on  from  physics  suggests  that  you  will  get  a  linear  plot  if  you  plot   these  quan==es?  

–  What  will  you  learn  from  the  slope  and  intercept  of  your  graph?   •  What  do  you  expect  to  happen  and  why?  

–  List  of  equipment  and  supplies  needed  for  your  experiment   •  References   –  List  any  references  that  you  used  to  help  plan  your  project  

•  Due  November  4th/5th    

Project  Presenta=ons   •  Project  presenta=ons  will  be  November  20th  or  November  21st    during    

Ac=vity  Period   –  A  copy  of  your  presenta=on  must  be  submi[ed  to  dropbox  by  11:59  pm  

the  day  BEFORE  your  presenta=on.   •  Your  group  should  prepare  a  PowerPoint  presenta=on  describing  

–  The  purpose  of  your  project   –  What  you  did  and  why   –  The  results  you  obtained   –  Graphical  analysis  of  results   –  Explana=on  of  uncertain=es   –  Conclusions  drawn  from  your  results  

•  All  group  members  must  par=cipate  in  the  project  presenta=on   •  Each  group  member  will  be  expected  to  assess  the  par=cipa=on  level  

of  all  group  members  in  the  project  planning,  execu=on,  and   presenta=on.  

Project  Reports   •  Due  in  the  drop  box  on  D2L  by  11:59  pm  on  December  2nd/3rd.   •  Each  group  member  must  prepare  an  individual  wri[en  report  

describing  the  project.   –  This  is  a  much  more  formal  report  than  the  midterm  report  

•  See  the  “Detailed  Guidelines  for  Final  Project  Report”  on  D2L   •  This  report  must  include  references  that  contributed  to  your  understanding   of  the  physics  of  your  project.  

–  Incorporate  feedback  that  you  received  during  your  presenta=on  to   improve  your  report.  

•  You  must  also  sign  and  turn  in  a  hard  copy  of  the  honor   statement  posted  on  the  D2L  site  for  PHYS  2011,  sta=ng  that   you  have  not  plagiarized  any  por(on  of  your  report  from  other   group  members.   –  READ  the  honor  statement  before  you  begin  preparing  your  report.     –  All  graphs,  tables,  figures,  and  text  in  your  report  must  be  created  by   YOU,  not  another  group  member  and  not  your  group  as  a  whole.  

–  If  you  have  ques=ons  about  what  is  considered  plagiarism,  ask  me.    

Project  Grading  for  Final  Project  

•  GF:  group  factor;  determined  by  your  group’s  assessment   of  your  contribu=on  to  the  project.  

•  PP:  project  proposal;  grade  based  on  completeness  (and   correctness)  of  proposal  as  submi[ed  to  instructor.   –  If  your  group’s  ini=al  grade  is  below  80%,  you  may  re-­‐submit  

for  a  higher  grade.   •  MAXIMUM  re-­‐submission  grade  is  80%.  

•  OP:  oral  presenta=on;  grade  based  on  evalua=on  of   Power  Point  presenta=on  by  instructor  and  other  groups.  

•  IR:  individual  report;  grade  based  on  YOUR  individual   wri[en  report.  

Your grade = GF × (0.10 × PP+0.35× OP+0.55× IR)

Late  Wri[en  Reports   •  Project  reports  are  due  in  the  drop  box  on  D2L  by  11:59   pm  on  December  2nd/3rd.   –  If  you  are  unsure  about  the  date  your  report  is  due,  ask.  

•  The  penalty  for  late  submissions  will  be  10  points  per  day.   –  If  you  discover  that  you  have  submi[ed  the  wrong  report,  you   may  resubmit  a  new  report  but  it  will  be  considered  late.  

–  If  I  discover  that  you  have  submi[ed  a  plagiarized  report,  you   may  NOT  submit  a  new  report  and  you  will  be  reported  to   university  officials.    (You  will  also  get  a  grade  of  zero  on  the   project  report.)  

•  NO  reports  will  be  accepted  a8er  the  final  exam  has  been   graded.   –  I  will  not  delay  submission  of  grades  to  accommodate  late   submissions.
