Running Head: THESIS AND MAP 1
LENNON-WINFREY 3
John Lennon and Oprah Winfrey
Thesis and Map
It has commonly been cited in various circles that leadership has a certain amount price attached to it. And true to the common belief, certain leaders both in the music industry, governance, private sector, public sector, industrialists from their immense impact on the lives of the people. The prices are out of the quality of their leadership.
The one thing that is interesting about the various leaders that have earned a price for their tremendous influence on people’s live is the fact that the leaders comprises of all categories both from the current and the past generations. As the synopsis of the paper explains, despite there being many leaders globally the focus will be on two leaders that although did not necessarily lead the world but still impacted greatly on the people’s livelihood in many ways.
The first leaders that impacted the world, but not in a leadership position is John Lennon he was a key member of the Beatles. He insisted with moving forward to have a famed solo career, and became an icon of the 1960s counter-culture revolution. Despite his well-known image, Lennon stepped out of his comfort zone and became a peace activist while spreading the word of love and peace throughout. During the period of the Vietnam War, Lennon imagined people living in peace and influenced an entire generation to look at the world in a different manner. Lennon's anti-war, anti-violence mindset contributed to his determination for peace (Altrapoint.com, 2011). Although the world was at war, he kept a positive attitude and was determined to put the hate, violence, and crime to an end without disturbance (Alyssa, 2013).
My motivation for choosing Lennon is informed by his determination to succeed as evident in his education life. He failed his GCE O-level examinations prior to joining Liverpool College of Art. While at the college, he failed the annual exams in the Drawing Art Class. In addition, Lennon was expelled from college before his final year. However, all these happenings did not prevent him from succeeding musically.
The second artist of choice is Oprah Winfrey. As a modern influential talk show host, she has played a key role not only in American life but the global life, shaping cultural trends and promoting various causes resulting into many honors for her exemplary servant leadership and transformative agenda for the world society. Oprah’s word of wisdom has been and continues to be influential to the people, for instance, the words “You can receive a lot of awards in your life, but there is nothing better than being honored by your own” alludes to the fact that it is a greater achievements for one to be honor or appreciated by the very same people whom one has tirelessly worked to better their lives. Her insistence on carrying an appositive action in relation to developing a positive vision motivated me in selecting her.
The similarities between John Lennon and Oprah Winfrey are that both are always determined with their actions for the period having positive outcome on the world population as evident in their words. During a political rally in the University of South Carolina, Oprah while addressing the crowd said, "Dr. (Martin Luther) King dreamed the dream but we don't have to just dream the dream anymore. We get to vote that dream into reality by supporting a man who knows not just who we are, but who we can be.” Lennon was full of encouraging words in his music as well as the various functions he addresses in his peace campaigns. The only available difference between these two great leaders of their time is that while Lennon is dead, Oprah is still alive and continues to bettering the society through here television network.
