ENG 105 – Extra Credit Assignments

For each assignment, please diligently and thoroughly complete all expectations, especially the word count. You can only earn a total of 35 points (3.5%) from these assignments, so remember to check your current standing in the course and make the best choice for you.

The reason for this assignment is to allow those of you who are either at risk in dropping a letter grade OR potentially able to rise up one letter grade the opportunity to achieve such a goal.

This assignment will also better prepare you for the rest of your undergraduate career.

If you are currently undeclared or thinking of switching majors, please select a possible major / department / field of study that most interests you.

Assignment 1

15 Points (1.5%) – 250-350 words total

For this assignment, I would like you to research at least 3 potential internships offered by NAU in your field of study and / or of interest to you. You can conduct your research by asking your advisor, emailing professors, looking at the department website, and consulting your department’s front desk (as you excel in your education, these informational places are key to your success as a student). After completing your research, please write the following:

· 250-350 word MLA Style report that informs your reader: about how you found the information on possible internships, how to apply, and which ones you found most appealing (100-150 words). Also, please pick one internship and describe the requirements for applying, the benefits you will receive, and a brief strategy for how you would go about becoming a viable candidate for the internship (100-150 words).

Assignment 2

25 Points (2.5%) – 450-650 words total

For this assignment, I would like you to accomplish assignment one. In addition, you will research who the most influential faculty members are in your major / department. This task requires that you understand the ranking system of universities (Full Professor vs. Lecturer), perform online research of your professors, ask your advisor, and browse your department website. Your goal is to better understand the publications and research your professors have completed (their qualifications) as well as your department’s expertise at NAU by answering the following questions:

· Every faculty member in academia has a rank (e.g. Associate Professor) and understanding this is important to you. What are the different faculty ranks? Why would “Professors” be better contacts than “Lecturers” or even me, a “Graduate Teacher’s Assistant” for you? Whose course would you prefer to take: a Lecturer’s or a tenured Professor’s course?

Describe what the difference in rank means to you and provide an explanation for why you might think a Professor is more important than a Lecturer (100-150 words).

· Now that you know more about rank, who in your department do you think is important? What do professors/lecturers and you have in common regarding research interests / employment possibilities, etc? What have they published? What are they currently researching today? What classes do these important figures teach? In what ways could you make contact with these people and learn from them?

Provide details on a couple of professors/lecturers you might be interested in learning from, strategize on how you plan to make contact with these people, and briefly explain how this will benefit your education (100-150 words).
