Part 1
Characterization is a tool used in literature by writers to expose the personality of a certain character and explaining the particulars of a specific character in a narrative or a story.
At first, the writer takes the role of introducing the character where he or she will be concerned in explaining the behavior of the character and at the course of the story, he or she will then reveal the thoughts of the character. In the direct characterization, the author tells the audience what the character is through the narrator or another character while in the indirect characterization, the audience will internalize for themselves the likes of the character by examining the thoughts, actions and the reaction of the character in a dialogue or a conversation with another character.
It is there very relevant for every writer to understand the function of characterization as this will help him or her understand the behavior of a specific character in a story by studying his thought processes, and this will in turn capture the attention of the audience hence enabling them to make a good relation to the events unfolding inside the story. In the end, we get to realize that all these are achieved through the contribution of dialogue as this play an important role in the examination of the actions and motivations of a character.
Characterization can be recognized in a play, drama or a story by examining the behavior of a certain character and this is achieved through the study of the actions and motivations of the character inside a play. In the process of characterization, it can be easier identifying the personality of a character by taking a keen look on the dialogues and conversations taking place inside the story.
There are many characterizations and the best example is ‘The Great Gatsby. Mr Gatsby is the main character is identified to be rich but his abusive nature contrasts his character.
Part 2
In William Shakespeare’s play, Romeo and Juliet, in the beginning of the story we get to see that Romeo has depression but towards the end of the play, she turns to be romantic to Juliet. When Benvolio is asked about where Romeo is he says that Romeo had seemed to having stress since morning and Montagues explains how his son has not come home and tells Benvolio may he has locked himself up in room with no light so as to appear imaginary. Romeo is having a depression after Rosaline has rejected his love and she cannot return her love, which Romeo is waiting for impatiently. All these become a story because after seeing Juliet, Romeo becomes relieved from depression and forgets about Rosaline completely. He is initially presented as a lover whose feelings cannot be diverted by any other woman he gets to see and admire. This characterizes Romeo has a young and inexperienced person in the field of love as he seem to be in love with the concept of falling in love than the woman herself.
In the act, we get to see that Romeo has evolved and changed from the state of depression the state of being joyous and loving. After being rejected by Rosaline, he undergoes the process of depression hoping that things will get better some day and this turn out to be true when he finds a new lover Juliet and loved her like he had not fell for anyone else. This signifies how Romeo has grown mentally and the evolution that has taken place in his thoughts from the time she fell for Rosaline who turned out to rejecting his love to the time he was depressed and at long last managed to relieve depression and renew his old thoughts and eventually falling in love again. In the end, we get to realize that Romeo is a loving man.
In the event where Romeo falls for Rosaline and becomes depressed after his love is rejected, it is clear that Romeo like being sincere because it can be seen that he meant what he said that he really loves Rosaline. Socially his relationships are strong as we can see from the base that is, his parents. After his failure to come home, we find his father looking for him and is more concerned about his whereabouts and this shows that Romeo had a good relation from the start. In the later stages of the play after he has fell, in love with his new love, Juliet, Romeo is seen to be deeply in love with her in terms of romance and the treatment he is giving her. This shows that Romeo is interested in his social welfare because from the detailed story he is displayed as a victim of love and relationships and this shows that he had more interest on his social being laid much concern on how he could live socially well through the choice of a right companion in life. What is important to this character is his ability dynamism where he can evolve from one stage to the the other, from one perception to the other. Romeo changed from the habit of falling in love with the concept of being and fell in love with a woman herself, Rosaline. He also mature and there a noticeable change in his language and form of expression.
During the course of the play, Romeo undergoes maturity from the state of adolescence to adulthood and this is a result of falling in love with Juliet and being exposed to be involved in feud marks his development from being a comic character to being a tragic figure and turns to be a blind lover.
In the end, Romeo changes from the state of maturity to immaturity when he resolved to dying after receiving the news Juliet’s death.
Romeo seems to be likeable since he is the point of focus in the play. This is because he has appeared to be a victim of both negative and positive circumstances that are there in relationships. From the initial point where he fall for Rosaline and at long came to be loved by Juliet. He is also sympathetic since he regrets killing Paris and takes pity on him and fills a wish that Paris should be laid next to Juliet. He finally feels compassionate because he has an understanding that Paris has faced death without getting to know the true love that he and Juliet had.
Part 3
I find Romeo interesting to me since in the play he is exposed to be undergoing a lot of which even though they are a times part of life, then not everyone can really persevere and sustain such situations. It is interesting to note Romeo is optimistic in his actions because after having in mind that Rosaline could be his true love, he takes a step to approaching her and decides to be in love with her. This shows that he first had the courage to approach her and let her know what he felt for her. This is interesting because in real life, many people lack courage in expressing what they have and Romeo can play in important role in becoming their motivation as his social story can instill courage to many people in the society.
I also like the character because he is dynamic and can change in accordance to the changes in situations. After being rejected by Rosaline, Romeo gets to the sea of depression for a while but his thoughts ware maturing until he gets out this trouble and found a new love. This is how dynamic he is since he can transform his thoughts from an initial stage and build a new state in the next stage.
Conclusion
As a matter of summing up our concern on characterization in the current dynamic society, we get to see that writers should adopt characterization, as this will help them identifying the psychological personalities of different characters and exposing them to the audience for them to examine the actions and behaviors of the characters. This will enable them to draw moral lessons and this helps the audience in molding their own social lives. It is therefore important to note that characterization is the major literal pillar in establishment of behaviors of different characters in plays, movies, dramas and books.
