Topic 6: THE INTERNET AND VIRTUAL CULTURE

PART TWO: What are contemporary directions in research regarding internet groups as culture?

Part TWO: LITERATURE REVIEW (15% of your grade) 3-4 pages

Not to be confused with a book review, a literature review surveys scholarly articles, books and other sources (e.g. dissertations, conference proceedings, journal articles) relevant to a particular issue, area of research, or theory, providing a description, summary, and critical evaluation of each work.

The purpose of a literature review is to:

· Place each work in the context of its contribution to the understanding of the subject under review

· Describe the relationship of each work to the others under consideration

· Identify new ways to interpret, and shed light on any gaps in, previous research

· Resolve conflicts amongst seemingly contradictory previous studies

· Identify areas of prior scholarship to prevent duplication of effort

· Point the way forward for further research

· Place one's original work (in the case of theses or dissertations) in the context of existing literature

The literature review itself, however, does not present new primary scholarship.

Based on the topic that you chose, for the first part of your project, I have provided a very general question:

journal articles are examples of scholarly sources; websites and newspapers are not.)

I. INTRODUCTION

a. Define the topic and set the context for the literature review.

i. Outline your perspective or point of view on the topic, how they have defined the scope of the topic (including what's not included), and how the review will be organized.

1. It can point out overall trends, conflicts in methodology or conclusions, and gaps in the research.

b. Construct a working thesis statement

i. Argue for a particular perspective on the material. A sample thesis statements for literature reviews is as follows:

More and more cultural studies scholars are accepting internet communities as a subject worthy of academic consideration.

II. BODY OF PAPER (about 2/3 of discussion)

a. Summarize and discuss the merits of each article and provide analysis and comparison of the importance of each article. Each source should get its own paragraph.

III. CONCLUSION

a. Summarize the main findings, make clear how this review of the literature supports (or not) the research to follow, and may point the direction for further research.

IV. BIBLIOGRAPHY

a. Include full citations for all of the items mentioned in the lit review.

TIPS AND GUIDELINES

1. Describe things clearly in your own words. Be sure to cite any part that contains information from your sources. In text parenthetical notation should be used.

2. Your work must be between 3 and 4 pages long double-spaced.

3. Use one-inch margins all around and use a 12-point font. There is no need for a title or cover sheet. Place your name in the upper left corner, drop a space and write “Part Two: Literature Review.” Drop a space and place the topic title.

4. Upload the Word document by the due date to the designated assignment folder on Campus Cruiser with the title YOURLASTNAME_Part2.doc
