Proficiency Exam for Information Technology (S5)

The portfolio exam is detailed on the following pages. Complete the requirements as stated.

Then e-mail this completed form and the exam components to [email protected] . Put

Information Technology Exam in the SUBJECT: line of the email.

This document includes specifications for your demonstration of proficiency for Information Technology (S5). Follow the exam specifications exactly to construct a portfolio that includes five original products that demonstrate your proficiency.

The products you submit will demonstrate that you have the proficiency to meet the criteria for this proficiency.

Information Technology Criteria

S-5: Can use current information technology for integrated solutions to problems.

1. Uses the current suite of software applications at a basic level as recommended by the University, including a text editor, presentation software, database management, and spreadsheets.

2. Uses and comprehends the structure of current Internet technology as recommended by the University, including electronic mail and web browsing.

3. Identifies a problem or problems that require(s) an information technology solution and applies a tentative solution demonstrating command and in-depth knowledge of the tools and techniques used.

The documents you submit must be created by you and must not include any materials or statements from other sources unless they are necessary for the submission’s completion. All work must be original. Any statements from other sources must be completely cited.

Portfolios must meet all criteria as specified in the exam to demonstrate full proficiency. Students whose exams do not meet all the criteria must complete the course to fulfill this competence.

Read through the following specifications.

Notice that there is a checklist that you should use to confirm that you have included all required components in required format.

Follow the specifications for each product carefully and completely.

Then send the items to [email protected] in a folder you have compressed (zipped). Submitting it in that format is one of the requirements to demonstrate proficiency.

The compressed folder should include six files, listed here and described in detail on the following pages.

Exams must include these materials.

All submissions must be in the format specified.

· Cover Page (page 1 of this document)

· Word Document (“Product 1” specified below)

· PowerPoint (“Product 2” specified below)

· Excel or SPSS document (“Product 3” specified below)

· Report on Internet Search (“Product 4” specified below)

· Plan to organize a solution using Information Technology (“Product 5” specified below)

Each file is a product you create to demonstrate your proficiency.

Each product should include your name and ID number at the top of the document. This is a weighted requirement of the exam.

Label the .zip file with your name and Technology Exam.

This is the format to use for the label for that .zip file:

YOURNAMETECHNOLOGYEXAM.

Label each file within it by the number of the exam product—for example,

1WordDocumentYOURNAME.docx

3ExcelYOURNAME.xlsx.

Correct labeling of the files is a requirement for successful completion of the exam.

Send the .zip file by email to [email protected] .

In the Subject Line put: INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY EXAM

If an exam is submitted that does not include all the required materials in the specified formats, you may be required to complete the course to demonstrate this competence.

Product 1: Ability to Create Word Documents

A three-page or four-page document prepared in Word that explains how you have learned how to use Word, PowerPoint, Excel (or SPSS), and Internet search engines. It should include at least one footnote, a note that provides detail about a book, course, or workshop, such as the name of the course and institution where it was completed. The paper should not, however, include any text from any other source.

Be sure that your document includes one paragraph double-spaced on each:

· Word—How I learned it, how I use it.

· PowerPoint—How I learned it, how I use it.

· Excel or SPSS—How I learned it, how I use it.

· Internet search engines—How I learned it, how I use it.

This document should include a centered title, Product 1: Ability to Create Documents. Boldfaced headings and subheadings. Students must include name and ID number on this document.

The document should be three to four pages long.

Create a PowerPoint document that presents a report on how you use technology in your work or studies. Your document must explicitly relate to your work or studies and explain the application of technology you do. This PowerPoint must be specific to you and your work or studies. For example, it could relate to how you use PowerPoint in making presentations and include examples of a presentation you have designed, but the presentation cannot be the majority of this PowerPoint. No part of this PowerPoint can be from a source other than your own original work. Only if the PowerPoint includes a presentation that you yourself prepared for work or another purpose can the document include previously prepared sections. Any section(s) you include that you prepared for another purpose should be identified as to purpose and date.

The PowerPoint should include a minimum of ten slides and incorporate graphics as well as text and should have a background other than white.

The first slide should include the following text: Product 2: PowerPoint.

Also include on that slide your name, ID number, and an image.

Product 3: Ability to create a statistical table and graph that analyzes a situation

An Excel or SPSS document that includes a table with data (see below) and a graph that presents data from the table graphically.

The document should have this title for the page: Product 3: Situation Analysis. Students must include name and ID number on this document.

In the table and graph, present information about one of the following:

This week’s weather: Compare and contrast Chicago to another city.

Cite the sources for the data.

Your product should include:

1. Topic you are presenting.

2. Source of the data.

3. Data table you have constructed.

4. Graph you have constructed based on those data.

5. Statement based on the data and graph.

Be sure to:

· Label each axis.

· Label the graph.

· Label the table.

· Write a caption for the graph that comments on the trends shown in the graph.

Product 4: Ability to complete an Internet Search

The topic you are searching for should be a current urban, national, or international issue and you should cite the sources and also classify the items by kind such as article, website, or other kind. Include the following items in your report.

The document should have this title on the first page: Product 4: Internet Search. Students must include name and ID number on this document.

1. Topic: (insert here the topic you are investigating)

2. Search engines used:

3. Reasons for selecting them:

4. Key words selected and why you selected them to identify the relevant research:

5. What basis you used to identify relevant research:

6. Identify ten items you have found during your search. List them including title of the page and source (website link).

7. Identify three you select as most useful for a report on the issue.

8. Explain why you selected them.

Product 5: Ability to organize the solution to a problem using Information Technology

The document should have this title on the first page: Product 5: Information Technology Problem Solution. Students must include name and ID number on this document.

Explain how you have solved a specific problem using Information Technology. For example, explain how you solved a financial problem, or how you collected and analyzed data to make a decision, or how you used information technology to determine the answer to a quantitative problem in a course or work application. This report can be based on how you solved a problem for work or for a course or for another purpose. You should not submit the work prepared for a course or for work. You are explaining in your response to this component of the exam how and why you used specific kind(s) of information technology to address this problem. Report must be a minimum of three pages, including in boldface the component of the item you are addressing.

Include the following in your report.

1. State the problem.

2. Identify the kinds of information technology you considered using.

3. Explain which kinds of information technology you selected and why.

4. Explain how you applied this technology.

5. Comment on how effective your choice of technology was.

If you have not solved a problem previously using Information Technology, then set up a hypothetical problem and solve it.
