Before analyzing the article, it is important to give a brief description of argumentation. By definition, argumentation is a form of instrumental communication that relies on reasoning and proof to influence belief or behavior through use of spoken or written messages. To be able to elaborate these concepts, it is important to evaluate the opinion article entitled “My Turn: Standing Up for the Truth” in Newsweek and describe how and why it is considered an argumentation essay.
This article is an example of argumentation. There are many ways of justifying this. Firstly, it is apparent that the author of the article is trying to educate his fellow Americans about his religion and to show them that Sikhs are not fanatical Muslim. The article is an instrumental communication because the author uses language to justify his arguments.
There are many major resources or proofs that the author used to achieve his goal of convincing his audience that Sikhs are not fanatical Muslims. The author manages to support his claim or arguments by lacing jokes with facts. He for example, joke that 99 percent of people with turbans in America were Sikhs, that Sikhism started in India 500 years ago . He then includes a number of facts such as that the Sikhs is now the fifth largest religion in the world. He also convince the audience that Sikhs believe in one God and equality for all, regardless of race, color, gender, religion and caste.
( ON the red barograph the word cited shouldn’t be there because the reading should be from the the text My turn 2014)
The second fact is that the author cited is that turban, which he wears contracepts his vices by arguing that turbans are great contraceptives. He wanted to convince the audience that wearing turban for the sake of it reduces religion to superstition. He wanted to show them that those who wear turban should not be divided by tribalism, female infanticide and gender discrimination and that Sikhs and many others in India may or may not doing the right thing.
( for the red words we should add three kinds that the author mention on the text )
The author is fulfilling ethical responsibilities when he uses his arguments to let the audience learn about the inner goodness of turban and to educate Sikhs and many Indians that they should not wear turban for the sake.
