Goal of the Assignment:
The self-analysis paper provides an important exercise in watching your speech, reflecting on your delivery and critiquing yourself regarding content, organization and delivery. These steps help you become fully aware of your own specific strengths and weaknesses.
Paper Guidelines:
After you receive the link to the class speeches, you’ll be able to find your speech. Watch the video of your speech and answer the questions below in a paper. For expediency, please copy the questions and answer each, e.g. 1. Why did you choose the topic you did? (Your answer.)
Questions to be Addressed in Self-Analysis Paper:
1. Why did you choose the topic you did?
2. Did you include all of the components of the introduction in your speech (gain attention, introduce topic, relate topic to audience, establish credibility, state thesis)? Was your introduction effective?
3. From an audience standpoint, do you think your speech was organized effectively to persuade your audience? Why or why not?
4. What were the strengths of your conclusion?
5. What impact do you think your message had on your listeners?
A. Were you persuasive? What do you base your assessment on?
B. Were your motivational appeals effective? Why or why not?
C. Were your rational appeals effective? Why or why not?
E. Did you pick an appropriate specific outcome for your audience? Did you achieve that outcome? If you had it to do over again, would you change the specific purpose of your speech?
6. How dynamic do you think your delivery was during this speech? How could it have been improved? What improvements have you seen in your delivery over the course of the semester?
7. Overall, what were your main strengths in your speech?
8. Overall, what were your main weaknesses in your speech (areas for improvement)?
9. What specific things will you try to improve on in future speeches (for school or job) in terms of content, delivery, and organization?
Points for this Assignment:
This assignment counts for 5% of your total grade for the course. The paper will be graded for accuracy in following the assignment guidelines, detail and thoroughness in answering the assignment questions, spelling and grammatical accuracy, and overall quality.
