Due to these challenges and the pressures of youth, many young people are finding themselves at the center of substance abuse

Substance abuse is a big problem in campuses all over due to uninformed decisions which many young people engage in.

University marks an important stage for the lives of many young people because this is where they build their careers and also make decisions which would impact on their lives. However it is also challenging because some of the decisions here could be destructive for example this is where they learn bad vices as well.

1-Campus life is one of the most challenges to young people due to peer pressure and school work.

*

Over 70000 rapes

Over 1400 College students die of Alcohol related abuse

Almost half of the suicide cases in the states are caused by substance abuse

Drinking on campus

Substance abuse is one of the things which have impacted negatively on many campus students . In many schools, taking drugs has become almost a norm in the sense that many students are spending most of their times on drugs than school work which has affected the quality of education.

1-Over 70000 rapes are as a result of drug abuse

Over 1400 College students die of Alcohol related abuse

Almost half of the suicide cases in the states are caused by substance abuse

More than 4 people out of 10 started drinking when they were on campus

Most of the people fighting drug abuse today started off in Colleges and universities.

*

According to research

There is also an increase in the number of accidents and academic problems which has been caused by alcohol abuse.

There are many reasons as to why any one would be worried about the current situation as far as drug use is concerned for example the number of on campus arrests have gone up and sexual assault cases are also rampant, research indicates that these has been caused by the use and abuse of substances.

  • 1-According to (James, G.(2009)), there has been an increase in the number of alcohol arrests on campus to about 21%
  • The number of sexual assaults which are related to substance abuse have also gone up with over 97000 students having been victims
  • There is also an increase in the number of accidents and academic problems which has been caused by alcohol abuse.

*

  • Marijuana
  • Cocaine
  • Ecstasy
  • Heroine

There are a number of substances which are commonly abused because of either their availability or curiosity among the students. Common substances include, marijuana, tobacco and even drugs like ecstasy.

*

There is an up coming trend which is very worrying and this is where students are getting to abuse prescription drugs. The abuse of prescription drugs is worse because these are drugs which can have adverse effects and also they can be purchased on the counter because they are not aillegal .

*

Unconscious

Difficult to awaken

Mental confusion

Slow Breathing

Eight breaths or less per minute

Irregular Breathing

Eight seconds or more between breaths

Irregular heartbeat

When students use drugs or the general substances which are prone to being abused, they are likely to display a number of symptoms, it is important for the campus management to understand the symptoms so that they can be able to develop proper intervention programs. Some of the symptoms to look out for include being unconsciousness, mental confusion and breathing problems .

1-Cold, clammy, pale or bluish skin

*

  • Lack of information
  • Availability of drugs
  • Stress due to schools work and family issues as well as pressure
  • Peer pressure

The cases of substance abuse on campus seem to be increasing every other day. There are a number of possible reasons for these however, the common amongst these include lack of information on the side effects and also the mistreatment of drugs. Others peer pressure are chief causers.

*

  • The universities do not restrict the use of drugs hence they increase
  • Lack of deliberate efforts to fight drugs

Since there are boards which control the use of drugs on campus, it means that the management have to depend on government formulated policies which are not easy to implement. Most campus also lack proper regulation on how students should behave on campus and this gives them some freedom to experiment.

1- Drugs are becoming more and more available to campuses.

*

  • There are falling standards of education among campus students because most are engaging in drugs at the expense of learning
  • The cases of addiction are increasing due to unchecked use of drugs
  • Parents are spending a lot of money on making sure that they fight the trends
  • There is increase cased of insecurity

The main effects of substance abuse on campuses is that the standards of education are following drastically because of the less time which students are spending outside the classroom.

*

The colleges and universities should have psychiatrists within the campus

Doctors and health practitioners should have basic knowledge in drug abuse

There should be a functional conduct office on campus

The entire community should be involved in all the activities that involve fighting for drugs

Academic advisors should also take a lead role in the fight

For the situation to be corrected, the universities should ensure that they have mentors and other professionals who would help them to give guidance to the young people. The entire community should also participate in the fight against this menace.

*

Being able to help when it is not too late requires that the problem is diagnosed by checking the following;

Carburetion tubes, masks and devices, smoking masks

Roach clips

Separation gins for cleaning marijuana

Cocaine spoons/vials

Chamber pipes, carburetor pipes, electric pipes, air-driven pipes, ice pipes or “chillers”

In order to look out for students who are abusing substances , it is important that management of universities and campuses to check out some of the paraphernalia which is used for drugs, having an idea of what is happening when it not too late will ensure that students are helped on time

*

The use of drugs and other substances has had a great impact on the mental health of many students

A high number of students is reported to have considered suicide and this are the effects of drugs

Many students have depression and they deal that the only way out is by taking alcohol.

Due to mental instability which caused by substance use, there are increased cases of homicides

The use of drugs has been responsible for mental related problems like stress or even depression. Many campus students have considered taking their own lives because they reach a point where they lose all understand of themselves.

*

Interferes with or encourages relaxation

Causes inhibition and reasoning as well as individual judgment

Increases the level of anxiety disorders

Poor processing of information due to state dependent learning

Aggression and violence: often associated with alcohol use

People who are mentally unstable have the tendency to lack concentration and they are also unable to reason well and make sound judgment. It is perhaps of the poor processing of information which has led to poor performance.

*

Poor coordination of muscles

Dilation of blood vessels which would cause the dilation of

The irritation of stomach walls

Lack of sexual energy

Stomach upsets

The problem of substance abuse is not just limited to the interference of mental reasoning. There are also many other physical problem like poor blood circulation which interferes with the function of the body system.

*

Many students are socially immature

Low impulse control

Can’t delay gratification—they want computer games, rapid texting and immediate responses

Mass media

Numb or ignorant to side effects

Lack of proper guidance and poor response from students

The main challenges which campuses face when dealing with the social issues that are caused by substance abuse is that many students have lack the capacity to make proper decisions due to their age of mental maturity. The mass media is also a challenge because people can now get information of many things .

*

  • The media has also played a key role because of advertising using images
  • The family setup is also not doing enough because most families now are single parent
  • The fact that schools are not allocated money to fight these menace means that there is increased apathy

The advertisements which glorify the use of some substances like tobacco has been a major factor for the students who become first time smokers because the images of “cool people” are used to market these substances.

*

The prevailing campus environment should be changed so that less students can have time to experiment

Create and develop clear policies concerning alcohol use

The students should be encouraged to change their attitudes

Parents should be allowed to participate

Student events should not have substances for abuse

Monitor the progress for students

In order for universities to and campuses to fight this problem, then the prevailing and current situation should be changed through the efforts of the government and all other stakeholders including the community.

*

*While it could be correct to say that campuses lack the capacity to wipe out the substance abuse threat completely, they have the ability to reduce the risks which are involved.

*The approach here should be to be prepared, to be alert and to the assertive and firm with decisions.

*

  • Using drugs is a complicated issue
  • Whether or not to use drugs is your choice
  • Respect yourself and this will help you make wise choices
  • Know the support resources on campus

*For students, they also need to be advised on the evils of drugs such that when they are making decisions, they do so from an informed point of view.

*They should be told where to get help when they need it

*Student have to have a good values on self respect.

*They should Consider the risks and benefits of any decisions they will make

  • The government should set serious penalty for those who sell substances to universities
  • There has to be deliberate efforts to make policies that would guide universities on issues to do with drugs
  • The government should set up support centers in campuses where students can get free advise

*The government should set serious penalty for those who sell substances to universities

*The government should provide help in terms of resources so the campuses can be able to implement some of the programs for fighting drug use and *menace. The government should also run support centers for helping students.

*

The community should provide material and moral support to the students in order to avoid taking drugs

The community should be on the look out for potential sellers of these illegal substances

The medical people should not sell prescription drugs to students without the doctor’s note

The campus should have intervention programs

  • The community also has a role to play because this is where people who sell drugs come from.
  • The concept of community policing should implemented in the fight of drugs and substances abuse.

*

  • Parents should be involved into the campus lives of their children so that they can be able to tell when there is a problem
  • Incase parents notice some abnormality with the children, they should talk to them in a sensitive way
  • The entire family should be involved in the event that a student has started using the substances

*Parents have a major role to play because the children learn some values from home. Parents should develop systems which would help children to grow with *certain values which can stand even when they join campus.

*They should be involved into the campus lives of their children so that they can be able to tell when there is a problem

*They should contact the university when they notice any changes on their kids behave.

*

  • Students should define their objectives when they start university.
  • They should follow the objectives and their visions so as to avoid deviating from their objectives
  • One should be able to avoid bad company and peer pressure
  • Always think of the reasons why they are in school.

Students are at the center of everything here hence the need to make sure that they make sound decisions since it is actually them who would be at the receiving end. They should set their goals and objectives well so that they do not deviate from them.

*

Substance abuse in rampant in University campuses even though many universities have notices that negate the same

Lack of knowledge among university staff is also part of the reason

Lack of proper policies from government is also a big issue.

We can conclude that even though the efforts being made on fighting substance abuse. the problem is growing bigger and more efforts and new strategies should be applied to ensure that problems is dealt with.

Every one have a role to fight Drugs abuse

Student are the big target on this mater for that they have to protect them self, their friend and their college mate.

*

Help students cope with stress, time and work management

Prevention messages should focus on freshmen and athletics because they are more vulnerable

Involve students in prevention/education efforts

Train faculty, staff and students to recognize signs and symptoms of substance abuse

If the war on substance abuse is to be won, the efforts should be targeted to groups which are vulnerable. Prevention programs should also include students and professional and also proper ways should be devised to help students deal with stress.

*Prevention messages should be repated and riche all the student

*

  • Every one can participate.
  • It will help the student to achieve their goal.
  • It will save money for university, student and government.
  • The university will have better environment.
