Project #2 – Social Change
Due Date: Wednesday, December 3 by 6:00 PM
Purpose: Social change is a constant part of our everyday reality. It is for this reason that I would like for students to investigate either a current collective action (riots, panics, etc.) or current social movement (animal rights, environmental rights, etc.). When I state current, I would ask that the collective action or social movement occurred within the last 15 years. I realize that it is easier to find social change in the past, but it is important that students realize this type of thing is taking place today.
Guidelines:
· Select a current (within the last 15 years) collective action or social movement
· Address why you picked this collective action or social movement. Do you have a personal connection to it? (As I stated the first night of class, many of us will pick issues to study because we have been influenced by it in some way.)
· Study this type of social change and consider the following when writing your paper:
· Briefly address, what took place?
· How was the sociological imagination involved? (What is the personal issue? What role does society play in it?)
· What type of social change is occurring? (This may require you to look ahead in the book to the chapter on social movements, social change.)
· How would structural functionalists view this social change? Remember, what function does this serve for society?
· How would conflict theorists view this social change? Who benefits, who doesn’t? Would it spur a revolution?
· How would interactionist theorists view this social change? What connection is there between the individual to the larger society? Larger society to the individual?
· Long-term benefits of this social change? Disadvantages?
· Overall reactions to the collective action or social movement.
Format: The assignment is to write a formal paper of at least 3 pages. Therefore, I would ask students to structure the paper with an introductory paragraph that lets the reader know what you will be discussing that should include your hypothesis, supporting paragraphs that address your findings from the advertisements, and finally a conclusion paragraph that wraps everything up. The majority of the paper should be your original thought with academic material supporting what you have to say, not direct quotations throughout the whole paper. The paper should be typed, double-spaced, one-inch margins, Headers should not exceed .5 inches from the top, and size 12 Times New Roman font. References to books, other than your textbook, you should cite this book with an internal citation and a bibliography page. (Citation information is located in the syllabus)
Grading: The project is 14% of your total grade. Students can potentially receive 100 points for this paper. Please see Project Rubric at the end of your syllabus for detailed grading information.
The break down for points is as follows:
55 points – Content
10 points – Organization and Structure
10 points – Spelling and Grammar
15 Points – Citations and Formatting
5 Points – Evidence of Preparation
5 Points – Meeting Project Requirements
Citing Websites: Below are examples for how to cite sources taken from the web (should include more than just URL, but also author, date written, title of article, date retrieved, website sponsor, and then URL):
Internal citation of Website: Intimate Partner Violence (IPV) has been declining over the past 10 years and this could be due to the increase in awareness through state and federal education programs (Catalano, 2008).
End Citation and should appear at the end of the document:
