Affirmative Action Should Be Stopped
Purpose Statement: Affirmative action has negative impacts on schools, businesses, women, minorities, and the economy.
I. Affirmative action has negative impacts on businesses.
A. Women with less experience will be hired over men, which can create tension in the workplace.
B. Businesses will make hiring decisions based on race and gender instead of skill and education which lowers the effectiveness of the workforce.
II. Affirmative action has negative impacts on schools and universities.
A. As a result of minorities being accepted preferentially into schools and universities; other equally or more qualified majority students are less likely to be accepted.
B. 57% of all college students are females so affirmative action is no longer necessary to even the playing field.
III. Affirmative action has negative impacts on women.
A. Women are less respected by men in the workforce because they are viewed as having been handed positions instead of earning them.
B. Affirmative action is demeaning to women because it misrepresents their qualifications.
IV. Affirmative action has negative impacts on minority races.
A. Affirmative action can make minority individuals feel insecure prejudiced against because it does not protect against racist thoughts or actions.
B. Reinforces stereotype that minorities need help getting positions of intellect or power instead of being able to do it them-selves.
V. Affirmative action has negative impacts on the economy.
A. Tax breaks are given to companies that are owned by minorities or women in New York City and so taxpayers must cover the costs of those breaks.
B. Affirmative action can stunt the economy as a result of inefficient business work forces caused by women or minorities with less ability receiving job positions.
